782 Series I vs. Series II question.
 

Quick question all:
What's the best way to tell the difference between the series other than the label on the air cleaner. I know some series I had an oil filter. Anything else to look for? Certain serial numbers? Might look at one later today and on the phone, they didn't have a clue when I asked which series.

NOPE...."some" of the Series II motors had the Oil Filter provision, but NONE of the Series I had that option.

Series I Motors had Spec Numbers from 24001 to 24299.
Series II Motors had Spec Numbers 24300 and greater

Thanks for the serial number info. Missed adding a second "I" on the previous message for Series II. Thanks for pointing that out. I did end up getting the 782. The good: IH built, original paint in great shape, IH hubcaps, sheet metal excellent. The bad: Series I motor. Runs good, needs carb rebuild and she's blowing oil in the backend. PO thought rear seal. Haven't had time to look yet. Pics will follow within the next couple days. Stoked to finally find a nice 782, even with the Series I.

So you found a series I that is still running 30+ years after it was built, but it's no good? Fix the oil leak, make sure it always is full of clean oil, and use it. My Dad has a dozen 82 series tractors, with over half of them with SeriesI engines. Most needed something when he bought them, but they all still run, and he never expected to be getting a new model when he bought them.

I never expected to get a brand new tractor when it was built in 1980.:Huh: I have been looking for a 782 over the past couple years. Been holding out for a Series II for the fact they are rebuildable and have the filter provision. I bought this 782 with the motor it has. It was in great shape and runs good. Other than that, I don't have any problems with a Cub Cadet with any motor in it. So much for gettin' excited about finding a 782. :bigthink:

I have a friend of mine that has a 682 with a Series I in it. Original motor still going strong.

Run it until she blows and then look for a replacement engine. If properly maintained, those engines are still good for around 1500 hours,

Been casually looking for a couple years. This 782 is a gem. I promise to get pics by the end of the week. And yes, it feels good to finally find one. My wife doesn't agree.:biggrin2: Thanks Mountain Heritage. How's your 782 treating ya??

FWIW, the Series I runs good and I plan to use it. Nothing against a Series I, was just looking for a Series II.
