149 oil and plug
 

Thanks to DonovanM., DX3, MattG, and Merk for tips on proper break in of a rebuilt Kohler 14hp. motor. The "grenades" you all spoke of are being removed from the motor this week before they explode... A couple of other quick questions...my oil dipstick is slightly bent and I am not certain if the bend should go up or down(I'm guessing down which indicates 'more oil' than in the up position)...so what is the proper amount of oil per Kohler specs that should be in that motor for reference in future oil changes? Also, as far as a spark plug goes....most any kind seems to work but has anyone discovered a clearly "best plug" for that tractor? Finally, where would I go to either buy an owners manual for a 149 or download one. I am new to the Cub family and am a novice, at best, but the yellow fever is starting to spread in my part of NC...

Per the Kohler manual, your 321 takes 2 quarts

Don't buy, get all you need right here in the Technical Library for free!

You'll find the operators manuals and service manuals for both your tractor and the Kohler in there. Browse thru the pages.

I dunno why anyone would want to buy a hard copy. Get the PDFs for free, and print out the pages you need while wrenching. You can wrinkle them and grease them up, then throw them away when you're done.

I've seen guys copy every page of their stuff, put it in plastic covers, and in a binder to protect it. I guess it's handy, but geez...

A lot of people prefer a paper hard copy of a Manual, that they can take to their shop and/or tractor and view the manual while working on it.

Binder Books offers real nice paper versions of Cub Manuals.

Actually the owners manual shows 3 pints or 1.5 quarts. I don't ever remember putting 2 quarts in.

As far as the dipstick, it shouldn't be bent.
For future reference you have a 1x9 series tractor and that is what you will see when looking for the manuals or you may see 1x8/9. Just thought that would help so you wouldn't go crazy looking for a 149 manual.
Bring that cub over when you get it done so I can take a look at it.

I'm glad you posted this Cub 149, because I thought it was wrong when I read it myself. In fact, when I went to buy oil (first time) for my 1650, I purchased the 48 oz (3 pint) bottle, based on what I had read - but it's been a few weeks and I couldn't remember for sure.

I got the info from page 15 of the Kohler owners manual, under "specifications" it has the 321 listed as 4 pints. It's the Cub Cadet owners manual that lists it at 3 pints. It must be that IH used a smaller oil pan than the standard Kohler used for these engines.
