Is My S/G Charging?

Hi all, long time reader, first time poster. I recall reading an article for troubleshooting the S/G on the Cub Cadets (Mine is a 124) that said to ground the "F" Terminal. If the battery meter leans towards the "C" the voltage regulator is bad. If there is no change, the S/G is bad. Well, when running, my CC hovers either towards the "D" or in the middle of the gauge, depending on the RPM's, occasionally leaning towards the "C" Well, when I grounded the "F" terminal, the gauge went all the way over to "D". does this mean my S/G is actually charging? I'd expect it to actually show it as charging on the meter.

D = Discharge
C = Charge

:bigthink:

If the S/G pegs the meter towards the D side, when the F terminal is grounded, I would suspect that either something is hooked up wrong, or you might have the wrong S/G.

Pictures would be helpful....:WWP:

I think your ammeter is wired backwards...

Put your voltmeter across the battery with the engine running. You should have about 13.5V if everything is working correctly, and you'll probably have 14+ when the F terminal is grounded. If you have less than ~13.5V and grounding the F terminal results in a voltage increase, it is not the S/G. If grounding the F terminal does nothing, it's the S/G.

Thanks guys! I'll check everything out sometime this weekend. Went to go and try it a few minutes ago, but something appears to be plugging up the fuel line going into the carb. No biggie, I'll disconnect it, and drain everything, then blow through the lines. Not going to do it anytime this week, as it's insanely humid/hot outside now, and it's only 10:45.

I will take pictures soon. Here are a couple I took when I picked it up, before I cleaned it off.

Not in the best of shape, but everything is solid, and it'll make a good restoration project.

With a creeper, no less. Nice...! :beerchug:

My carb was plugged up just inside the nipple where the gas line enters the carb. Lots of rust and crud blocking the flow. Cleaned everything out and went right back to running.
