rare coil?
3 Attachment(s)
hey guys, i thought i would post this here so maybe more eyes can see it and give some input. i have a 161T 7HP Kohler that needs a new coil. in the "wanted" section, i posted an ad for one of these and roland gave me a number and picture that does not match what i have. thank you roland for your reply. i have a few take down photo's from my own logs, so you can see what i'm dealing with if your not familiar. i wrapped the coil in electrical tape because the bakelite was cracked so severe that i thought the spark was escaping. next i had to come up with a clip that holds down the coil to the stator. my recoil has been reworked by the p/o and the dogs don't disengage after being pulled. so i have to sling a rope around the pulley to start it. the engine wants to run, i have it static timed, cleaned the carb, tried just about every conceivable adjustment from the initial settings on the jets, and i can only get it to pop a couple times. the one time it did manage to run, the choke was at 3/4 and it wouldn't take any throttle. maybe something in the governor adjustment? can't tell till it runs at idle.if anyone has any ideas or suggestions, i sure would appreciate it.

Here is the Ignition Data for a K-161T - Spec 28498E
Some of the parts are NLA. I would suggest that you start with our Sponsors above to see if they have some NOS Parts. Then check the Parts Resources in this section for the same..... Parts Resources |
Standard Magneto in Chicago should have the coil and possibly the retaining clips.
http://www.standardmagneto.com/ I replaced my coil a few years ago and got it from a marine parts dealer. Some old Mercury outboards use the same coil. http://www.autoboatmainetruckpartsga...-Bendia/Detail These may be the correct retaining clips but I'm not 100% sure. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/?cmd=...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT Hope this helps, Bill |
rare coil
bill682, thank you for the reply and information. also welcome to the site. only one site had an id of the coil i have, but they don't have any contact info. i will try another approach. do you have the same setup on your engine, if so would you happen to know of someone holding an extra recoil assembly for the same engine? thanks, rick

Yes same setup, same spec.number. The coil I linked to is what I used and fit/works perfectly, the sparkplug wire just connects to it different than the old one but it's not a problem.
The correct mounting flange for the recoil is very hard to find but I see recoils for sale occasionally. |
