Does anyone know how to read a serial number to tell what the garden tractor has?

I can tell you what model it should be and what month and year it was made. Other than that there is no telling. If the GT's had anything extra on them it was all special ordered either from the dealer or the buyer. If it is a CCC model I can only narrow down the year of when it was made.

why would a 782 have a plate on the back,looks like it is for cat 0 3point but is it because the case isn't steel?

Not really because the rear end isn't Cast Iron, but because that is the only way to put a Cat 0 lift onto the back of a cub. Pics would help a lot to see exactly what you are talking about. :)
