Cub Cadet 106?
 

i believe i have a cub cadet 106 and am having trouble getting spark. Im new to the whole older tractor experience especially with this tracter being almost 15 yrs older than me. i want to get this tractor running befor sinking a pile of money into restoring it for my son. If there is anybody that can help me go about doing so at the least expensive route please feel free to dump your knowledge on me. if there are any fellow virginians that might be close by that could help me that would be even better as i am more a hands on type guy. Im located close to fredericksburg VA

First thing to do is go to our Tractor Technical Library and download the Service manual for your 106. Then download the Kohler Service manual for the Single Cylinder engines.

More than likely your points pitted and not set correctly. Also the condenser could be bad. Make sure all of the ground wires are touching fresh clean metal. Remove and clean each ground connector and where the wire touches the motor and the starter and the frame.

You can take some light sandpaper and clean the points then use the following link to set the timing (point gap) the correct way. Once you have done all of these try starting it.

thank you! i found the serial # and it is 2050037U342825. when i plug in 2050037u in google it comes up with a CUB CADET 106. what do the #s after the U determine?

The part after the U is the serial number.

...and your serial number indicates that your tractor was manufactured in May, 1970 in case you were interested.

Thanks for all the info so far I'm sure I will have plenty more questions to come as I get deeper involved in this tractor. Unfortunately winter is approaching fast and I have no garage to work on it in. Might have to get me a pods so I can stay on top of the restoration.

DX3 is right, the manual is a great tool for working on your tractor.

In more or less the order I would check and things I've actually run into: If it's been sitting for a while the points are probably corroded and not making contact. That can be checked with a test light or continuity tester. As long as the points are breaking you should get some sort of spark, though it is a good idea to set the timing eventually if you want it to run properly. While you already have the test light/continuity tester out make sure there is power to the positive side of the coil when the key is turned on, and make sure there's continuity in your plug wire. I've also run into a fouled spark plug or wrong gap and a bad coil. The grounding issue DX3 described usually happens more often after a restoration when paint gets in between the connections, as long as the block is grounded you'll get spark. Also I think if the condenser was bad you would still get spark it would just be really weak.

i went out and bought a new set of points and a new condenser. Still no spark. i tried the static timing method mentioned above and still nothing. Im baffled as why there is nothing still.

I am jumping past all the ignition controls straight to the starter because the wiring harness has been altered and the battery is dead. im not seeing anything. i start out with the gap at tdc at .020 and am continously trying to get the points to break right when the "S" is centered on the sight hole as directed in the static timing procedure. Im not the type to give up but im getting pretty aggravated with this motor.
