1641 w/Briggs 16hp crankcase oil capacity

I have a 1641 w/ Briggs 16hp Twin. The book calls for 3 pints 8 ozs (which should be 1 3/4 quart?) to fill the crankcase but after draining & replacing filter I added the amount called for in the book & ran it for about 3-5 minutes and shut it down to check it and it appears to be way over full. Does anyone have CC with this engine or info about the listed capacities on these engines etc? I've even began to wonder if I have the wrong dipstick???

Tractor Data says it should be 1.9 qts.

My service manual says approx. 3 1/2 pints with a filter change. I guess I have never measured it out before. I just fill it until all the hash marks on the dipstick are covered.

Just fill it to the hash marks. I doubt you have the wrong stick. Also you may have not gotten all the old oil out. We use a thing to suck the oil out, I don't care for it, but it get about 95% of it out.

That is what I have always done before but this time I had the owners manual out so I looked it up and just added the prescribed amount. I was thinking it would be quicker than adding some & checking 2 or 3 times to get it just right- well so much for that idea.
Thanks for the input guys, now I guess I get to remove some oil and rack this up as a lesson learned.
