Blown KT-17 from 782 - rebuild or repower options
 

I have the chance to buy a IH 782 cub cadet and several attachments from the original owners son that has a blown motor. I'm trying to decide if $1000 for everything is a good deal. What are my options for rebuilding or repowering this kt17. I think it's a series 1 engine since the serial number is 680XXX.

"IF" the motor is a Series I, then it would not be worth rebuilding.

You can drop in another Cub Cadet specified KT-17 Series II or a M-18 with no mounting modifications.

There are possibilities of the KT-19, or M-20 also.

There are other possibilities with other motor manufacturers and models if you are will to do some modifications.

@ $1000 it should have a good running motor. not blown series 1 junk.
The only thing to save is the carb on the series 1 engine.
$250 would be a fair price for tractor with bad engine, add more for what other impliments come with it.

I agree with Ol George. $1000 sounds pretty steep with a blown series 1. What attachments come with it? If there are alot of good attachments or rare ones, the price could easily add up quickly. Got any pics?

That price is steep for even a good running tractor, IMO, but there is more than just the carb on a Series I that should be kept; cylinders, valves, heads, stator, flywheel etc. are useful for Series II engines.

the 782 comes with a 50" deck, sleeve hitch, roto tiller, 2 cultivators, disc, one bottom plow, & box scraper

Just for comparison, I paid $500 in Virginia for a 682 with a 44C deck, both in good condition, just needed a good carb cleaning. No hydraulics, no hitch, no accessories, just the mowing deck and a set of Carlysle Super Lugs on the rear. It was worth it for me. I think I did well, but not what I would call a smoking deal.

From what I have seen on this board over the past year or so, I would be thinking about $250 for the mower, blown engine, hitch and all, and (assuming good, serviceable condition) the following:

$350 for the rotto-tiller
$ 50 ea for the cultivators (then again, why do you need two? Offer $50 for both together)
$ 50 for the box blade (if it's one of the little 4' Brinly ones. I have one I picked up for $40)
$150 for the disc and bottom plow together.

So, I would be considering offering about $850, with the understanding that I would be putting another $800-1200 into it for a replacement motor. Then again, in Virginia Cubs aren't as prevalent as they are in the midwest, so they seem to command higher prices. Since your buddy won't have any need for the accessories once he's sold the 782, you might even get him down to $750, and that's where I'd start.

Am I far off, guys?

One last thing. Don't pay or offer anything for things you don't need or want! If you don't need a plow, tell him you don't want it and drop your price accordingly. He will either throw it in, or sell it separately himself. Don't pay for things you don't need. If you'll never use the implements, just bargain for the tractor! He's trying to get rid of things. Make him buy your money!

Well, then the question is whether you need all those attachments. Tell him to keep the ones you don't need and renegotiate the price. Those photos indicate the implements are well-used, but decent condition and good pieces of equipment. A little better than what I was envisioning. His price is probably not bad for the whole shebang. Keep in mind, however, the engine is blown. You won't be simply overhauling the engine if it is blown. You will be buying a replacement engine. A blown engine likely means a hole in the block. A replacement engine will cost you $800-1200, depending on the engine. Check ebay and you'll see what I mean. You might be lucky enough to find an engine in need of overhaul for a lot cheaper, but then you have to overhaul it. You will probably end up finding another mower later-on for a better price, that you don't have to rebuild, and end up parking this one, or parting it out. So that means you are simply paying for the implements. So, still, the question is whether you need any of those implements.

As for the mower, if you were to part it out, you would probably be able to get a good return on your money, but it's a headache to do. Let me know if you go that route. I could use a lift and sleeve hitch for my 682!:biggrin2:
