new to forum, what classic cub do I avoid?
 

I'm sure this will be a mixed bag answer just like asking which one is better/ more versatile. I've wanted a classic 60's-70's cub for a while to go along with my IH Scout II and my Travelall, and want to get an all around good little tractor for around the house stuff. Maybe light plow, garden stuff, and of course, mow. I want one that it's still affordable, dependable, parts are easy to come by, etc. Everyone has their own opinion to this, but what I'm really looking for, is what to stay away from.

Avoid those ones with 2 brake pedals and 26" rear tires.

I would keep away from the QLs, the models with the rubber engine mounts, 1250 etc.

Keep away from any cub that is coming head on at you, especially if you are on a JD machine!!:biggrin2: :Welcome2: The WF are often easier to work on due to the extra space and 12hp seem to be the most common. I see lots of 129's and the parts are easy to come by and somewhat affordable, except for the 3 point hitches if you are wanting to do tilling, etc.

Obviously you will want to keep away from post 1981 machines that were built by CCC rather than IH. The CCC tractors are plenty fine, but you want a proper companion for your Scout.

The next basic dividing line is the narrow vs wide frame models. In some areas of the country you will have better or worse luck in finding implements for the two styles of machines, which are not interchangeable. In the narrow frames, you could look for 127s or 147's made about 1971. In the wide frames, look for 129s or 149s.

Lots of other choices, this is just a basic set of ideas for you.

When you are looking at Cub Cadets and want a true IH made model, it ain't about the model year so much but rather by the serial number range. If IH made it, then the chassis serial number will be <699,999. CCC started building tractors with serial numbers 700,000>.

if its Red. make sure it has a cast iron rear end, for an IH built model
