Power steering valve

I was working with my new power steering valve and noticed that when it is not connected hydraulically the shaft will turn without any stops. Is that normal? I cannot remember ever having tried to turn a power steering vehicle when no hydraulic connections. I can envision hydraulic fluid providing resistance when the ram reaches it's travel length but it doesn't seem like it would be a real solid stop. Have any of you experienced this condition?
Thanks

That's normal, mine did that too.

Thanks Chip. It's one of those things that most of us never play around with and when it comes up is seems like there is something missing. I guess that's why the ram that is used has to be the exact right size or some big damage could be done to the steering gear.
