KT 17 Series II Fuel Pump - Little Help
 

I determined that the gasoline in the oil pan is not from a faulty carb and that the fuel pump is not pumping gas properly. I bought a replacement Kohler fuel pump and went out last night to replace. I removed the fuel lines and the four screw/bolts that appeared to hold the pump in place. The top half of the pump came off easily and I am looking down at a square rubber diaphram with what looks to be a circular plunger. (Rust colored too, Ugh!) I thought that by removing the four screw/bolts the whole unit would lift out, but no.

Here is a picture of the replacement kit I purchased. In the Kohler Manual it refers to a flange (See Arrow) where the pump lever exits the unit. Is this holding the lower half of the unit in place and how do I get at it? Do I need to remove a shroud and intake manifold on the top of the block to access the flange or am I missing something really simple?

Any help appreciated.

You can get at it without taking the shroud off. Much easier if you remove the shroud, but that alone can take some time. You will need to remove the shroud that has the SN on it - one screw. You do not need to remove the intake manifold to service this. Two philips screws should be holding it on. If you have a long philips screwdriver and a steady hand, you could probably make it work. I would recommend putting some loctite on the screws because the screws tend to rattle themselves loose. BTW - I bought one of those fuel pumps and it works pretty nice so far. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick repsonse. Not sure how I would get at it without removing the shroud but I will take a look this evening.

Yeah, it's a stretch. I can't say you can replace it without removing ths shroud, but I know that I could get a screwdriver in to tighten up the screws by only taking that single shroud off. I did take the screws out and loctite them at the same time. Maybe I took some bolts off and shifted that shroud, but I know that I didn't take it completely off. If you're having trouble getting the screws in there, maybe some grease in the bolt holes will hold the screws for you.

Take the head tinwork off on that side too, as it'll be much easier to see. It's not that hard to replace it that way. Make sure you clean up the area on the block around the fuel pump before you remove it so you don't drop dirt into the engine.

Were there any symptoms before the motor had gas in the oil? My kt17II was runnig fine yesterday and just quit. It was a little low on oil. I filled it up and it wont fire.

Is this the same engine that is in question in the MTD CCC section that you said it just quit while mowing? How low on oil? Will it turn over now? :bigthink:

Yeah it will turn over. It dosent turn over as fast as it did. But it turns over. It is couhing fuel out of the carb now.. I put new plugs in it tonight,(autolite) and still nothing. I dont know. when i try to start it it cranks and acts like it wants to start, long engouh for the starter to disengauge, but wont fire. The new plugs i put in are sparking a blue spark. The tractor was about half way between full and low..

Full and low of oil on the dipstick.. And yes, this is the same mower thats on the other thread. Im new here, i love cubs and have been to busy at work to introduce myself and post pics. I will soon though.
