primer looks glossy!
 

Hi all did some priming yesterday and I used vansickle flat gray primer mixed 8:1 like it said on the can. It said to use naptha or high grade mineral spirits so I thought thinner would be fine,well it looks like gloss ford gray! Did I mess up by using paint thinner instead of naptha? Can this be sanded down once it cures and painted over with a top coat,or what? Any help or thoughts on this would be very much appreciated . Thanks in advance,Brian

Why didn't you follow the directions? Lacquer [paint] thinner, mineral spirits, and naptha are three different things. What is the topcoat supposed to be thinned with?

Because I thought that mineral spirits and thinner were the same thing. The top coat is to be thinned with the same as the primer, naptha or high grade mineral spirits. Am I going to have to get all this primer off and redo it or can I scuf it up and spray the top coat on it?

I always try a test area first on a piece of sheet metal, prime then paint to see if it works , if your primer really sticks to the metal . not all paints work with all primers. I would have used a self etching spray can primer and be done with it. try leaving it in full sun for a week to dry out oils in the solvent and see what you have then and wet sand it with 400 g paper

I think his real question is does he have to remove the primer, and my response is no, the primer does not have to come off.

Lacquer thinner and naptha are chemically similar enough that the paint is not ruined, you are just not getting the expected finish.

Scuff the primer and top coat, you will be good to go.

Thanks guys,yeah I should have read the directions better and did a test piece . I was worried that if I shoot a top coat on using naptha to thin it that the top coat would peel off. Gonna be a booger to get all the nooks and crannies scuffed up and hope we have some more sun here! Been raining alot for a week now,last 3 days have been dry,but looking like rain everyday so been laying my parts out after work to sun dry.Thanks for all the advice,I appreciate it very much! Brian

it'll be fine. the thinner just came out of the paint faster then the oil based reduser.
prob didnt take long to dry.
I never use the naptha, I use urithane reduser. it makes it shine more.

just dont use lacquer thinner any more, its way to hot. naptha or mineral spirits is oil based like kerosene and comes out of the paint very slow.
so , no . naptha /mineral spirits and lacquer thinner are not the same.

Thanks guys for all the input on my screw up! And well 4speed it did not dry quick,took almost a day and a half to dry to touch,had a few runs and had started to use a scuff pad on it some and the runs aren't dry yet. I have been letting it sit in the sun after work of and evening,so it will dry up more,just may take awhile. Think I will stick with naptha,that is what is recommended on the paint can,I don't wanna screw up anymore than I have!..lol
