Bought my first cub cadet...how did I do?

Well...I have been looking for a week so I finally bought my first one...what do you think?

I paid $1400.

The good:
No rust
Runs strong
Drive shaft replaced last fall

The bad:
PTO switch must be held up for mower deck to work
Headlight switch broken
Mower deck pretty well worn
Went to start it up to back off the trailer and the starter won't engage! No clicking or anything! Fuel pump runs...ideas?

The starter and PTO switch are available from one our sponsors. Your starter not engaging may also be the ignition switch , so you might do some testing.

The deck looks good in your pics ????

The deck is pretty beat up. PO painted it.

Starter worked fine a couple of hours ago. PO disabled the safety interlock on the brake... But I pushed it in anyway. Glow plugs work, fuel pump runs, but no starter noises. Ammeter does register heavy discharge though when I turn the key.

Bill, you did well. The PTO switch has a contact that is closed when it is in the off position. The tractor will not start unless the switch is "off". Wigle the switch with the key in the start position to see if that helps. There is also a brake switch that must be closed for the tractor to start. Your starter could also be going bad as well. I would check the switches first. There is a starter upgrade post on here somewhere that explains how to replace the starter. Also check all your ground wires. I think there should be 2 heavy ground wires, one on the frame and one to the engine cradle or block. Good luck!

Jump it

With a simple jumper cable from the battery to the starter (Positive) and the other to ground on the frame will tell you right now if it is the starter. I would do that first to save all of the safety switch detective work. Everyone is right here but if you want to know up front whether the starter is bad jump it. Otherwise you got a great deal in my opinion. I prefer yellow and white but red will do in a pinch!
