My 1650's Maiden Mow and observations
1 Attachment(s)
Well last night was the first time to try the recent 1650 purchase and have some observations
1. This thing goes fast. It has lots of get up and go. 2. I think I need to adjust neutral somehow. When I go from drive down to the neutral spot it kinda sits there and rocks back a little bit like it’s in reverse. Is this something that I can adjust? If so how? 3. I mowed for a bit, turned it off and tried to restart and nothing. It has to be one of the safety features. I had the brake all the way down and was wiggling the PTO switch while turning the key. A lot was happening but I think it is the PTO switch. I do not know how to troubleshoot the system to tell for sure. The pto turns off when I flip the switch so I don’t really know. 4. The ignition switch seems to be sticking a little bit in the start position. It does not pop back into the on position like I think it should. 5. When I kick the starter on it kinda sounds like an ooga horn. Kinda sounds the same when I turn the motor off it kinda sounds the same. 6. The lights (or light) on this thing are super bright. Though I have one burn out. Any source for a replacement? 7. When I put the throttle down to turtle it dies. It did not do that the other day but last night it was dying . I need to look into this more and see if it keeps doing it. In sure there is an idle adjustment if that’s what I need to do. 8. One of my steering wheel spokes is broke and he tried to epoxy it back. I need to get a new one. My triangle IH badge fell off and almost lost it. It was on the footrest though. 9. Did the 1650 have taillights or reflectors. I know the taillights that are on it are not right. They are some oval type marker lights. 10. it seems pretty tough but the deck was no match for a sneaky hidden mesquite stump. It bent the inside part of the deck and jammed a mower blade and smoked my belt. Prolly needed a new one anyway. Tractor supply has some Kevlar belts that are ½ by whatever inches. Anyone have experience with these? I don’t know where else to get belts by just the dimensions besides here. I dotn have a CC dealer in town. 11. my mule drive is noisy. I just found out It was called a mule drive the other day. The tensioning lever rattles like no ones business. There does not seem to be a lot of tension on it either. Is there a way to keep it from rattling? My eyebolt looking thing is bent too. Why does it have a threaded adjustment when there is a spring tensioner too? 12. I have a hydro drip somewhere by the rear end. It does not seem to be the cover plate. More twords the front. Not for sure what this is yet. 13. I need a lift setup and an angle drive box for a tiller 14. You can mow in reverse and get off the seat and it still runs! 15. I need a picture of the correct battery hold down setup. Did these have a battery tray? Some of my sheetmetal is kinda thin under the battery and his custom rope hold down is not too awesome. 16. my wife cussed me for buying it but she would not get off it. |

Here's what your tail light should look like: |
Sounds to me like you are having to take care of all the long overdo odds and ends of a CC 1650. You are just going to have to use this list as a check list for adjusting this and replacing that. In the end you will have a 1650 that you are proud of. I am in the middle of that myself, but remembering its all just nuts and bolts, and knowing what a good little tractor I will have when done keeps a smile on my face and makes it all worthwhile.
Remember this Cub of yours is 35 years old or so. You cannot expect it to be problem free, not for only a thousand dollars. But from what I see here, you have a good Cub that needs some maintenance and massaging. Don't get discouraged. Keep good notes of what you are doing. You may want to do it again with another Cub when you see how nice this one is when finished. Van |
I am running one of the tractor supply kevlar belts on the deck itself. This is the second season on it, no problems. I run a stock belt on the PTO/mule drive. I have read others here post that it is best to stick with a cub cadet brand belt for the PTO/mule drive. hope that helps.

i think my oogha horn sound is comming from around the front pto. i can turn teh motor off and the center of teh pto will still be spinning a whinding down and i can here a noise coming from there. not for sure if it is the pto yet. it engages and disengages well i think. i see there is an airgap check to do but i havent yet. i have to find my feeler gauges first.
i also took my mule drive off to do something and my shaft holding the pullys is bent around one of the cotter pin holes. i have a peice of 17-4 stainless laying around that i will be using to fix it. |
I just bought four lights off Ebay (GE 4411) for $28 with free shipping. I found them at TSC for $15 a piece and Walmart has them with a rubber casing around them for $14 but I have never tried to remove the casing.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-Sealed-Be...6#ht_500wt_922 This link has 12 of them for around $60! A great deal. Ryder Fleet Products also has a website that sells them but they are cheaper on their Ebay store. http://stores.ebay.com/ryderfleetproducts |
I get mine from Ryder Fleet main web site for $4.37 each with free shipping. That's $52.44 per 12 which is lower then their eBay store price. I'm sure they are higher on eBay due to the fee's.
http://www.ryderfleetproducts.com/ry...oductDetail.do Now you all know my secert place for getting bulbs.:bash2: :biggrin2: |
How many bulbs do you get? It takes $250 to get free shipping. I haven't looked at what else they have though.

Hey Duke
Checked out the Ryder site, This is what you need on those O's http://www.ryderfleetproducts.com/ry...oductDetail.do :biggrin2: |
Looks like you're getting acclimated to your new 1650 the same way we all get to know our new Cubs. It's part of the allure of the tractors, some part of the Yellow Fever that you deal with - one day, one use, and one problem at a time. You'll get everything figured out soon enough, and know every quirk and charactaristic of each Cub toy you have... and you can't leave it alone, always tinkering, adjusting, improving... enjoy it; like the others said, you will have a tough, stout Cub after you tie up the loose ends, and there is plenty of support right here on this forum to help you every step of the way. :beerchug:
