Another 1641 question...

Another strange problem...I went to check the transmission fluid, unscrewed the cap and there's no dip stick. Anyone seen this before? The 1641 was given to me after it lost its drive shaft. I'm about to put a new drive shaft in it, so I'm a bit concerned that the dip stick going down into the tranny may have cause a problem???....anyone have any thoughts on this? Also, how will I know a safe level to run in the tranny with filter change?

Thanks in advance!!!

DX3....thanks for the reply. Yeah...the cap was screwed on but looks like the dipstick portion has fallen down into the tranny. Any idea if this could have worked its way out of the filler tube and screwed up the tranny?

Thanks!

No way of knowing till you try it. If it were me, I would pull the rear cover and drain the fluid and see if it is in there. If you haven't done the hydro fluid yet, it should be done anyway with a filter change too.

Sounds like good advice. I have drained the fluid, but have not put the new in yet. Sounds like I'll be pulling the cover in the AM to see what's in there. Thanks again for the replies. I'll post what I find.

Ok...good news and bad news. Pulled the rear cover, good news is there is no sign of the dip stick in the transaxle, the bad news is I have no dip stick! I'll have to order one and get it coming.

I was hoping to at least get this thing to a point I could test it out this weekend. I know the manual says 8 quarts of fluid, which I have. Think I would be safe throwing that amount in and cranking this bad boy up? Does anyone have a safe approximation to put in it until my dip stick gets here?

Thanks in advance!

2 gals with the filter, put 6 qts. in, start it let it run for a few mins to fill the filter then add the last 2 qts. or it will over flow out of the vent on the top of the trans if your tractor has the vent, ask me how I know :biggrin2:

Ok...I'll play, how do you know??...joking. I appreciate the help. Just about ready to put the rear cover back on, install the driveshaft, filler' up and try it out. I'll update...thanks again for the help!!

For whatever it's worth, I put a thin film of Permatex Ultra Gray silicone on both side of the new gasket when I put the cover back on. Since you don't have a dip stick I think I'd only put 7qts in it. If it's 1 qt low it won't hurt it and it won't be over full.
