k301 throws sparks out the muffler when reving up throttle???

Could it be hot carbon and rust flakes out of the muffler? I have seen alot of older tractors do this. Carbon gets deposited on the inside of the muffler and gets heated up red hot and rust flakes as well,have see this happen before.

Yes, it is carbon build up. I have an old 8hp tiller that does this the first couple times of use in the spring. I am a generator tech and yesterday I was running a 1500kw unit. It had about a 1/2" build up of unburnt fuel and carbon. I did a 2hr load bank test on it to clean out the wet stacking. For the first hour it was like black snow. It covered everything!:biggrin2:

I saw this yesterday evening..hot embers (sparks) coming out of the exhaust. Mine is a 1979 1250 Hydrostatic with the 12 HP Kohler engine. I noticed that I had to keep increasing the choke to get power out of the engine.
This morning, I used the machine to pull a small six rotor disc in a flower garden area...had to run full choke.
Could it be that the muffler is collapsing inside, clogging the exhaust path & causing the engine to have too much back pressure? And causing the sparks or embers?

Your engine has a serious lean condition. You may want to pull the head and see if the head gasket is blown. First check out the carb and make sure it is securely mounted to the block. I wouldn't run it any more until you identify the problem.

To get rid of carbon in the combustion chamber, simply run the engine up against the governor and mist some water, intermittently into the carburetor. The water turns to steam and blows the carbon out.

What does this mean?

The engine is ALWAYS "up against" the governor........ always. :Unknown:

I agree about the water...... But don't think its a carbon issue.

I agree with Austin.... It's running lean. Too lean doesn't leave carbon, but it does raise exhaust temp, which would blow out hot rust in an old muffler.

I can't think of a single good reason to explain that to you. Or why I would even want to.

My statement was in response to post #2. Nothing to do with you or why the OP had a problem.

Up against the governor has always meant full throttle to me, but I'm old.
