Need Help with Cub Cadet 2072

Hello,

We just purchased a Cub Cadet 2072 with 465 hours showing on the hour meter. After buying the tractor, we discovered that the drive shaft rear splined coupler (Part Number 903-1066, 703-1066) which connects to the pump was stripped out and the 1/8" roll pin was sheared off.

Is this a common problem for these tractors or is there an issue with the hydrostatic drive causing the coupler to fail? If the coupler is the weak link, are there any modifications that can be done to help?

Thanks!

Sounds like a nice 2072 with low hours. Congrats! The supers are notorious for eating driveshafts. I've seen 'em wear to the point where the coupler is loose, but I've never seen one shear all the splines. Maybe someone else has??? I really hope the splines on the hydro pump are ok. The couplers were still available from the dealers ($100+) but I heard the were going NLA. Check with the sponsors, they might have one. Another thing to check is the rearend bolts going through the frame into the rear end. These tend to loosen on the supers and they can wear or break off causing issues. Once again, congrats on the 2072 and of course, got any pics??????:biggrin2:

Some guys have modified their own driveshafts or have used shafts from later models with the CV joints and modified them to work.

I hope someone has a good used coupler for you. I bought a new one for my 982Redline a couple of months ago and it was $157. Oh, and yes it is a common problem. The other common problem is the seal wears a groove on the input shaft cause the seal to leak. The shaft is nla, so the only fix is to find a good one or have a machine shop build it back up.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the great help and information!

I am not sure what I am going to do yet about the coupler. I did look at the spline on the hydro pump and it is chewed up some. I may try to modify/repair the old coupler, but I am not sure yet.

I will try to post some pictures of the tractor and coupler tomorrow.

Thanks!
