Couldn't resist

After months and months of scouring craigslist and getting burned twice on people selling or giving away cubs from underneath me I finally found and picked up a 782 for a mere $200. Although I think its a series I but hope I wrong, I wasn't going to lose sleep over it or the $200. The motor has a circle filter (from what I've read thats an indication of a series II) but it also has the steal bolt filler cap (again from what I've read an indication of a series I). I can't seem to find any tags anywhere. But from sitting outside for many years it seems to be in good condition. No rot but has surface rust but that will come out when I paint her. The kid had a cover over the engine to avoid the weather and when I checked the dipstick it was still fresh looking oil and not burnt. He said that his dad parked it there years ago when he was a kid and they bought a new craftsman. So with any luck I'll get some life out of what could be a series I but with better luck I get even more life out of what could be a series II.

Congrats on a great deal on your 782! Post some pics of your engine and I think it can get ID'ed by those.

Congrats on your 782. I really enjoyed the one I had. As Duke said a picture of the engine might help us ID it for you.

Only the early Series 1's had the square air filters. The later ones used the round one. There are tons more of them out there with the round filter instead of the flat on. With the metal oil plug, I would say that there is a extremely good chance that it's a series 1.

On a brighter side, it looks to be in decent shape and it appears to be either a IH built one or a early CCC one.

Nice find!

Nice grab for $200.Looks to be IH built as the front axle and seat springs are red.If they sit long enough the oil looks clean but once you start it up the gunk on the bottom of the pan will mix with the oil.
Did it come with any attachments?

It did come with a mower deck. Its kind of shot but I'm going to try and restore it. I put my 105's battery in to see what action I would get and the lights turn on so thats a plus! The last picture is a plate I found after using my air compressor to blow off some debris.

A craftsman instead of a cub......hmmm.....No wonder you got it for $200! Congratulations-it looks happy that it has found a good home where it will be well taken care of in your hands. Glad that you finally got one-great things come to those who wait!

Nice find on the 782!! Looks to be pretty straight. Looks like she's probably got a Series I in it. My 782 has a Series I and has the round air cleaner. Mine runs great. Keep it full of oil and stay away from steep hills and you should be fine. Once again, congrats! :beerchug:
