Ugh! Blew the engine in my 682 today.
 

Mowed the lawn yesterday and the engine wasn't running right. Acted like a dirty carb, so today I removed the carb and cleaned it. Put it back on and started her up to adjust the main and and idle jets. She was running like a top, when all of a sudden, she started losing rpm and sounding like she was working hard, then, in a matter of a couple seconds, before I realized what was happening, I heard a loud clatter, and started seeing smoke from under the cooling metal near one cylinder. Funny, though, then it quit clattering and started running again well, although I could hear that something was loose in the engine. I could see some fresh oil leaking from the right cylinder somewhere.

Haven't had time to take it down and see just how bad it is. Started looking for a rebuilt or used engine on the Internet. Man alive! I had no idea a replacement engine was going to cost so much! Now I'm trying to decide whether to just part the thing out and go buy another one.

Guess I need to get my 1650 finished pretty quick!:bash2:

You are so close to PA, just pop up there tomorrow and get a replacement tractor.

That is easier than fretting about an engine. :bigthink:

Sorry Tony....OUCH! I blew my belt on my deck and thought that I had a bad day on my 782....Maybe you can part your engine and defer the cost of another one or else save some $$ by justing getting the parts that you need. All the best wishes on a fast repair!

Tony, sorry to hear about the motor giving out on you.

Sounds like the governor came apart like on the 1882 I repowered. Maybe I can help you out, I have a used CH22 looking for a home.

Sounds like what my 782 did, broke one rod, punched a hole in the block.

Mine is a series II KT17. So I decided to rebuild it. It has been a learning experience. If I were to do it again, I would have welded up my original block, bought used rods, new pistons and rings. I would be up and running again.

If it were me, I'd either rebuild it...or find a used M18. :beerchug:

I know this will sound Shade Tree but - Had a friend with hole in the side of his block and not the source or finances to have welded. JB welded a patch over the hole and still no leaks 10 years later.:bigthink:

Yes, that can be done. We used to have a Farmall M with an IH 400 block that my grandfather rebuilt years ago...the original Farmall M engine was hurt to much to rebuild, and he found a 400 block with a crack in the side for cheap...so he JB welded the crack, and rebuilt it. It worked fine, but would seep just a little bit every now and then when it would get hot. :beerchug:
