147 mowing again

The last thing on the list of to dos to get mowing again was a new front tire as the old one had the tube showing through. The tire arrived from Miller yesterday, so I took it to a local tire place for install. (figured it was easier since I don't have any tools myself.) He didn't charge me for the swap (remembering to pay that forward!) as he told me that he likes doing small wheels/tires and doesn't get many of them.

After an install of the wheel, I got set to mowing. Mind you this is the first run of the Cub since I acquired it last month with PTO and tire problems. It really took me back to childhood- if you read my last post you'll remember that I grew up on a 125 and really haven't run it since the last time I blew it up about 6 years ago and dad had us use the 782.

I had to re set the mowing height so it'll match my push mower that I still use for tight places. Other than that, I'm very impressed with the way it cut. I'm just disappointed I don't have a bigger yard to keep going.

I never minded push mowing, but I love the way the grass looks cut w/ a 3 bladed CC vs. a single blade push mower.

I was also impressed with the way a 40 year old mower cut the yard vs. a 1 year old push mower. My back yard is in a low spot so it is often soggy and the ground takes a while to get back to being hard. I cut my neighbors back yard and hers is worse- a lot of grass is gone due to water- I was impressed how much flotation the Cub has- only sank about 3 inches or so. 3 days ago this was still water.

Here is the pic of my new tire. It only has 10 lbs in it (as per the manual) but the tire looks flat, and the manufacturer says a max of 28. Anyone have this particular tire, and have an opinion of the PSI?

If you put more than 10psi in the tire, your back will start complaining!!

The older you get, the less pressure you will run!!

:biggrin2:

My 1000 has 4 psi in the back tires, I use a ATV gauge.

Looks like the 147 did a great job for you.

Ha! That's part of the Yellow Fever! You started mowing your neighbors' yard, and now it'll be every week! Yes, it's true - you can't stop mowing with just your yard!! I was sad that I lost out on trying to move to a more urban area where I could get 3-5 acres so I would have plenty of grass for the Cubs to feed on - but I have adapted here in the cul-de-sac! I started by mowing the grass around the sediment pond. Then I moved onto the open space/common area around the sediment pond - got the field looking real nice between two houses. But that wasn't enough! I tip-toed out under the power lines after the bush-hogs came through last year and found that the ground was rather flat and firm and the grass was very nice and thick if it was maintained!

Now, between my .41 acre and the rest of the 'voulenteer work' I do around the neighboorhood, I get well over an hour's seat time every week, and I can keep chopping down a new row of powerline field as I see fit - there is probably 3-4 acres of mowable grass down there (or what I like to call the 'proving grounds' - all bought or repaired Cubs get tested out under the power lines). The neighbors are happy, and my son even has a patch to cut with his Cadet 80. And - it's all optional cutting - if I don't get to it, no big deal.

Best of all- I don't have to pay property tax on anything other than mine! That savings will always offset the cost of fuel for Cub seat time!

Attaboy, sounds exactly like something I would do!

I typically run 25 psi in my front tires so it is easier to steer. There is no degradation in ride quality with that much air in the front tires. The rears would be another story.
