drive shaft repairs to the 1811

I have had a oil leak on the hydro input shaft and the new seal came today. I pulled the covers and was starting to take it apart when I noticed the engine end of the shaft was not running centered. got all the bolts out of the flex disks and drove the roll pins out of the rear couplers and slid them forward. this allows the drive shaft to come out as a unit. here are some pics of what i found.

1 is the flex disk from the engine end. bolt hole at top was tore out.

2 is the coupling on the hydro the bearing goes in, I think I can save it with a new bearing.:biggrin2:

3 is the engine flange, bearing or whats left of it. and the end of drive shaft.:bash2:

4 is the hydro end before I unbolted it all. this is the seal that is leaking on the front of the hydro.

if anyone has a drive shaft that will fit a 1811 send me a pm.

now just to order parts and wait a few more days, not a good time of year to be down. I will post more pics of changing the seal on the hydro as I do it.

If the rear coupler wobbles at all on the input shaft, it needs replacing, too. I'd be surprised if it didn't, given the condition of the rest of the parts.

I agree with Matt and I wouldn't buy a used drive shaft. They are easy to make. I use a POS $50 drill press and some 5/8 rod from McMaster-Carr. My 1811 looked just like that before I replaced everything but the shaft ends and now I can set a full beverage on the tunnel cover at full throttle and nothing spills. Good luck!

Well we are nearing completion of the repair. I got hydro pump seal put in and the pump bolted back up. always make sure you dont forget the small floating pin in the pump shaft that drives the pump gears. you can just see it in the 1st pic. I just happened to see it fall out when I tore it down. missing that would be like :bash2: when it didn't work. I had a pic of all the pump pieces but the phone didn't save it.:bash:

then came the drive shaft, got the holes drilled in the new one and polished the ends with fine emery cloth. got the flange bolted to the motor, ( and yes in the pic it is backwards,) SIL was helping and didn't know till I made him change it.lol:Choke:
at least he still had the bolts loose. we got the rest bolted in and the pins all back in and started it to make sure we had pump. let it run a min and rechecked every thing.

I hope this part is good for another 25 years.:biggrin2:

no longer than I run it tonight the vibration was gone and it was smooth feeling. this week will tell, go get a filter and some new fuel line in the morning and then prob 10 or 15 hours mowing this week to get caught up.

:Thanks: for all the help here.
