1512 Power Steering Conversion
Hey guys! Just got off the phone to Chris at Cub Cadet Classics..and looks like I will be buying the power steering unit off of his 2072! :beerchug:
Sorry Doug...I am a whippersnapper! :biggrin2: So, in the next month..I will probably be starting to put this thing on. My question is, how hard will this conversion be? Should be a bolt-up, since it all is the same in the front between a 1512 and 2072, shouldn't it? If anyone has pictures of this conversion, they would greatly be appreciated! |
Forgot to add...Chris will be throwing in everything that is power steering related on the tractor. Including the spindles...
So, will I still need a different axle? :bigthink: |
No, I would use your current axle and spindles, but drill a new hole for the tie rod end that is the same distance from the pivot as on the SGT front axle. The spindles from an SGT will not fit a GT axle.

Maybe he said spindle cap? Where the clevis attaches? :bigthink: |
good deal, good buy too..

Thanks, Doug! I'm hoping to do everything this thing needs at once..while the engine is out. Drive-line rebuild, alternator/water pump belt, hydraulic o-rings, and now the power steering. Even thinking about adding one of XMV's hydraulic split kits. :beerchug: :bigthink: |
The spindle cap as you call it is integral to the spindle on a GT front axle, and splined to the spindle on an SGT.
I should have worded it this way: There are no interchangeable parts between a GT and an SGT front axle. They are completely different. |

Ok..So, I will have to make these spindles work. :beerchug: And I won't have any issues with the cylinder/ram hitting the tire? :bigthink: |
When I did my conversion the ram hitting the tire wasn't even close to being an issue because the ram doesn't move, only the rod moves. The ram does move a little sideways as the wheels are turned to the left but it isn't that close. I also had two holes on the spindle arm which gave me a choice of turning radius. I ended up using the one closest to the wheel for stop to stop turning. I used the front axle from an 1862 and the spindle arm was not integral to the spindle but came off if it needed to be removed which I did several times to get the left/right travel centered. I do not know if an 1862 is a GT or a SGT. Once you get it done you will really enjoy the improvement. It would be interesting to know what PS cost the manufacturers. If it is less than $500/tractor it should be on every model that will use any kind of implement other than a mower deck.:beerchug:

I looked at your thread on this.. There is a lot of valuable information! :beerchug: My question is, why didn't you use your old axle? Was there no way to use the factory, 82 series axle? :bigthink: |
