Now What
Ok, so I had this little leak at the rear end of my 1250 and thought it might need a new gasket on the rear of the transmission case. So, I took off the tiller gear box last night and examined it. It's not leaking at the gasket, but there is hytran slowly leaking out of two of the bolt holes. Am I looking at getting a new rear end, or what? I'm really hoping there is something else I could do, because I don't have money to buy a new tranny right now. Thanks for the help.

I had a similar situation happen to me. I am not saying this is your situation, but you may want to examine this. I had a Cub with a Tiller on it. The PO didn't do a good job of installing it and the Tiller Bracket was loose on the Rear End. From being loose, the bracket wobbled around. This put a lot of stress on the Tiller Bracket Mounting Bolts. Once I got the Tiller off and took the Rear Cover off, I noticed that a couple of the Thread Holes had broken out of the casting. Fortunately, I could find all the pieces. I took the tractor to a Professional Welder, and had the pieces welded back in. Now, there is no path that the oil can take by following the bolt shaft to the outer cover. See attached image for reference..... Just offering a possible suggestion. |
Thanks for the information guys. I don't know when I'll have a chance to take everything apart and have a look, but I'll let you know when I do. If bolts that were too long were screwed in, would they break through and cause a leak? I briefly looked into the holes and could see the "bottom" of them all, except for the ones that were leaking. The ones that were leaking were dirty and I couldn't see the "bottom," but maybe that was due to the hytran. And the leak is a very slow trickle when the bolts are removed. Thanks again,

I had the same problem, cracked bosses around the bolt holes.
Somebody had fixed a couple before I got the tractor, couldn't find the pieces to weld back on. I replaced the whole rear, more leaking now. |

Just went thought this with my 100. A new gasket and black rtv on the screw threads took care of it. Also if you take the tiller hitch off be sure to put the shorter bolts back in. Good luck. |
Well if the bosses are cracked ,,, JB weld !! Either on the inside of the case. Use brake cleaner to remove any residue or MEK. Or just JB weld studs in the holes and use a nut for installation of the plate. :bigthink:

Eagle Keeper thats a good idea. Only trouble is I would be worried when using the tiller. It really thrashes around, rake or trailer I be to worried about.
