KT17S no spark
This was a running KT17S in a 682 with low compression and smoked. I pulled engine, honed cylinders and replaced rings, fixed leaky gaskets, put it back in the tractor. It has 104-106psi compression, cranks over fine, fuel is fine, but will not fire. I am getting no spark to the plugs. I am getting 12v to the coil, everything looks to be plugged in right. I didn't have the points, condenser, or coil out. I didn't make any changes to the electrical system other than unplugging the a 2 wire lead from the stator, unplugging the PTO wire, and removing the red power cable to the wire before I pulled the engine.
I just removed the jugs, pistons, and rings. I didn't mess with anything that would be timing related?? I checked the PTO wire looks fine. If the safety switch is not activated it won't crank over at all. I did have the regulator off to clean it, but hooked it back up right. I even tried a spare regulator. I don't think I would have done anything that would affect the stator?? The only thing that comes to mind is the bolt holes for the grass screen on the flywheel did not line up when I put the drive cup. I don't understand why because it is keyed to the crank. It might have nothing to do with the no spark issue... What am I missing? |
Here is the basic KT Ignition circuit. Follow it through until you find the problem.... KT Ign

I took off the cover to the points and it started firing. Must have grounded out to the cover somehow. Strange because i never took that off while working on the engine. It is running great now besides blowing oil out the PTO side crank seal. Looks like a new project...

Vibration could have caused the wire insulation to rub through and ground out. Examine that wire real close, and replace if needed.

UPDATE...
You may want to look and see if this grommet is present and in good condition.... |
