Switching 2072 transaxle to 982
 

Are there any threads on here with past experiences with switching out the 2072 aluminum transaxle to the 982 cast iron? :bigthink: I am planning on doing this as my winter project since my 2072's is in bad shape. :bash2: My biggest concern is if there is any retro-fitting. I'm not the most mechanically inclined and I wouldn't want to get in over my head! :HeadScratch:

Maybe just some advice? What's involved? I guess I should've included some pictures... that seems to get replies!:biggrin2:

If you have a donar rear end from a 982 its a bolt in swap. The 982 will have the correct reduction gear for the super garden tractor hydro pump.

You can take all the interals from your aluminum rear end and swap them into a cast iron housing say from a 1450, 149, etc. but that job is more complicated as you will get into settng up the gears in the rear end and such.

That's what I was wondering! I had found a 982 rear end on E-bay a few weeks ago but let it slip away... I definitely am looking for the easiest swap I can find plus the added weight and durability! Thank you!!:beerchug:

Vince put a tranny from a 149 in my 1872. He took the innards out of the 149 transmission and then put the super parts in. Here's a pic. Sorry, it isn't closer.

I used one from a 125. Switched out the pinion shaft and carrier. Some people suggest switching ring gears on the carrier - you don't have to disassemble that much if you do it that way.

If you are putting a CI rear from anything other than a 982 into a super and using the super pump, the pinion shaft has to come out so that the driven reduction gear can be changed. You still have to take it all the way apart regardless of whether or not you change the ring gear.
