Wheel Weight Protectors...

1 Attachment(s)
Not sure if anyone has tried this, or if it's a good idea or not, but I am putting some weights on my SLTX 1050 and thought I'd try it... I cut some pieces out of an old innertube and will use some adhesive to hold the pieces in place on the weights while I mount them, and hopefully it will protect the paint on the wheels. Let you know in the Spring.

Our own Matt G suggested I rethink where the weight might make contact with the wheel. I looked again and he was absolutely right, I would have had the rubber pieces in the wrong spot. I ended up cutting 4 bigger pieces of the tube about 2" wide, enough to go all the way around the weight (sans where the notch is for the valve stem), put one on the bottom of the wheel, carefully put the weight in and then left the nuts loose on the bolts. I then slowly rotated the wheel and worked the the remaining pieces in place, and adjusted all 4 pieces to where they weren't visible, and tightened down the nuts. The pieces of innertube tightened down nicely and hopefully will work as an insulator the protect the wheels. The other weight is ready to look like the first.

Sam, Dad has been gone for almost 16 years. As I knew I was going to need weights for my new Cub, I had been looking for wheel weights, or a rear weight kit, but couldn't find anything under $100. As Mom and I were BSing up behind the farm the other day, I just happend to see something half buried in the ground. Sure enough, it was these weights that Dad had bought at an auction or something, back sometime before he passed. They will always be worth a lot to me! :-)

Great find of the weights, I'm thinking your pa put you in that spot at that time to find them.
By the way, good idea, hope it works.

What's funny Zippy is that seems to happen a lot!

Does anyone know how much these weigh? 50lbs? Thanks!

I've got a set of those, too. They are about 50 lbs if I remember right.

I'm trying a couple coats of "Dip It " the liquid insulator in a can that we dip our tool handles into.

I brushed it on around the inner edges that would touch the wheel. Should help with the scratches and nicks.
