Carburetor Damage Question
 

Hello everyone, I was curious if anyone out there has experienced the issue I'm working with. the threads for the air cleaner backing plate screws on my 72 are stripped out, and I was wondering if anyone knew whether they can be repaired or if there are better techniques than what I have in place. I have pictures of the damage and a picture of the 125's carb for comparison.

the "repair" i'm using is taking a slightly larger screw and inserting a small wire into the hole before screwing it tight.

it works, but I know it's not making things better. anyone know of anything better? Thanks!

Maybe drill it slightly larger and tap for a bigger screw? Only thing I.can think of

not a bad Idea, just not sure how much metal I have to work with before I do some real damage. I was wondering how difficult it would be to possibly sleeve the holes with a piece of automotive brake line, if I could find the right diameter.

Carb Damage
 

I have a couple carbs that were repaired by installing a helicoil. A good machinist should be able to do the job for you. The kit is available from Carquest Auto Parts if you want to do it yourself.

I did the heli coil thing on more than one carb and it works great if you do it right it is better than new you put in metal threads and will last alot longer

I agree I would try drilling the holes out and tapping them out. I think there is enough meat left on the carb in order to do that.

the epoxy route sounds pretty good! I think I'll try that first, and if that doesn't work, i'll drill it out and re-tap it or try the helicoil. thanks everyone! I wanted to avoid getting a new carb, because this machine runs beautifully as-is!
