Put the shifter in "N" pull the shifter cover and first look at the bottom of the shifter there should be a round ball on the bottom of the the actual shift lever (sometimes these get worn really bad and sometimes they break off) "work" the shifter and make sure it does what it is supposed to be doing make sure it doesn't "pivot" in the cover.

Look inside the case, there will be two round rails that run front to back... look past the rails and see if there is a gear with all the teeth missing if there is, that should be self-explanatory.

If you don't see any bad gears then chances are the "shift fork" is either loose, broken, some of either or all of either... There will/should be a "fork" on each of the two rails, each fork should have "prongs" that fit in a grove on their gear. If you "line" the tops of the forks up you should be able to see where the ball on the end of the shifter should set, kinda like a little oblong box... If the little box is way out of wack the the fork is bent/broken.

Check to make sure that the prongs on the forks are in the grove of their own gear, then see if the fork is clamped tightly to it's rail, the rail and the fork will pivot back and forth a little, you need to see if the fork slides forward or backward on the rail (it shouldn't) the fork should be tight on the rail and when the fork does go forward or backward the rail should move with it, in doing so the corresponding gear should move too..

To summarize:

Shifter pivots in cover. Not too bad, repair.

Shifter worn badly/broken. Buy a different shifter.

Fork loose on rail. Easy fix.

Bent/Broken fork. Not too bad but you gotta make sure you get any broken off parts out of the case and that they didn't do any damage while they were in there.

Bad gear. Worst case, can be replaced, as long as it didn't do any other damage.
