M18 Blue Smoke

Been working on this new to me 682 with a M18 swap. I had it running for a little while and it was smoking pretty good. The dipstick shows some soot in the new oil (30 weight). I pulled the head on one side and there is a little pitting in the cylinder wall. I can't post photos from my phone but I'll get to that later tonight. Am I right thinking the dirty oil is more a ring problem than say a worn valve guide or a head gasket on its way out? I would think the pitting plays a big part and I'm hoping once i can get some pictures up, you guys can point me down the right road.

Thanks!

Not good. Looks like some water got in there at some point, judging by all the rust in the valves there. In that last picture the bore looks pretty bad.

Will any of the parts from a KT interchange with the M18? Reason I ask is that I have a KT17 out of a Deere that as far as I know has a broken rod but the cylinder bore looks pretty decent. Only pulled the head that has no compression and the piston is not moving as I turn it over. If the parts will help someone I'll take it apart. Carb is spoken for. Also how do I tell if it's a series 1 or series 2? No tags on the engine.

Sam without tearing the engine down, there is no positive way of telling if it's a series 1 or 2. Now if it has a plug for the oil fill, it's probably a series 1 and it won't work on the OP's engine. Depending on which side the OP has issues with, even a series 2 cylinder won't work because of the magneto mount.

Pete if you want replacement cylinders pm me. I have some M18 cylinders laying around that I would sell.

If I pull the jug only off the dead side can I tell if it's a 1 or a 2 by looking at the crank? As far as I know the 2 is drilled for pressure lube to the rods and the 1 is not drilled.

Thanks

Best sure fire way to tell is to pull the cover plate. If it has the oil pressure relief ball and spring, it's a series 2. If not, series 1.

Thanks for the info. That's what I will do at least then I'll know how bad it is inside. I can see that the push rod for the points is all buggered up and it was sitting with no points cover on it so it has some corrosion around it.

So are you guys saying my cylinders are trashed? Am i better off getting ones in better shape or having them overbored. Are the valve guides replaceable?

Sam Mac 11-06-2012 06:27 PM

Pete

I am no expert on KT's or M18's but as far as I know the guides can be replaced and the cylinders can be bored. That said you would need to find over size pistons and rings and then you need to check the crank and on and on. Add up the total cost and then decide if it should be rebuilt or if a re-power makes more sense.
