Connecting Gear Box to back of 1650 for 1A Tiller
I have a cub cadet 1650 that I am putting a gear box and 1A tiller on the back of from a 1450. Having problems with hydro tran leaking after putting on the gear box. I used the same bolts from the 1450 as they were alittle longer and it is still leaking. Any thoughts on how to stop the leak? I do not want to torque the bolts too tight as I am afraid of doing damage. The leak appears to be coming from one of the bolt holes but I am not sure as it is hard to tell once the gear box is on. Any sealant or tape we should put on the bolts? Any assistance and guidance is appreciated.
Thanks, Cleon |
Cleon, sounds like you might have to replace the gasket.:bash2: Around the holes on the rear cover plate might be pulled in some. Don't tighten them over the specs as you can crack the housing around the bolt holes.

As Methos said, it might be the gasket, but it could be leaking around the bolt thread, I've seen that, but is it more of a seep/wetness.
You can try putting a sealer like prematex or simular ( I have used pipe dope) on the leaking bolt thread. If it stops, you found the problem, if not no harm done. I second the thought of not going tighter on the bolts. You can crack the casting area bolt boss, and or strip the threads and or "pucker" the cover around the bolt head causing a bigger leak. Best of luck! |

i have used silicone around the bolts, then thread them in. had the same problem w/ 1450 #2 when I mounted the gear box. Silicone ixed her up.

My thought is it would not be any more of a lubricant that the hydraulic oil leaking through the thread. Now Teflon type tape thread sealer is really slippery and I swore off of it because of it's ability to find it's way into valves, spools seats and other places where it causes problems. but that is just my feeling/experience. |

Since it has warmed up I started trying to solve the hydro leak from attempting to put on the gearbox on the 1650. I took the gearbox and rear plate off and discovered that the gasket was all cracked up and looked like it had been melted on with heat. I also noticed the gasket was was ripped around the two top holes where the gear box attaches. I cleaned all the old gasket off and noticed some of the surface around the bolt holes appear to be chipped away on the inner portion of where the bolt fits into, no longer a smooth surface. See attached picture.
Will a new gasket still hold a seal with these chipped areas? Is there any way to make sure these areas will be sealed by the gasket or fix the chipped out areas? Also what is the correct size of bolt to use to put on the gear box? This tractor has never had a gear box on it since we got it and I want to make sure we are using the correct size bolts length wise. This gear box along with the bolts successfully ran on a 1450 for years. Any advice or guidance is appreciated. Thanks Cleon |
Just my 2 cents and I want to caution you I have never installed a tiller but when I put a rear cover on I put a thin layer a silicone on both sides of the gasket. I like Permatex Ultra Gray. I’d use the same size bolts that came off the 1450 that had the tiller since you had no problems with that.

for years i have taken the gear box on and off with no issues. then i decide to change the hy-tran and put a new gasket on, ever since the new gasket with the gear box on it leaks. not sure why, should have left well enough alone. might try gasket sealer.

Dad also reminded me that he put loc-tite on the bolts holding the tiller box on because the tiller bouncing around has loosened said bolts. (his 125).
