Why you should not use starting fluid.
This is the kind of damage that you can do to an engine using starting fluid.

I have used Starting Fluid for years. Never had a problem. For me, it is knowing how much to dispense. I only give an application a brief "mist". I suppose if one was to dump a major liquid amount....your link explains what will happen.
I am NOT recommending Starter Fluid.....just citing my experience. |
Usually in most engines it break's the ring lands, but it affects different engines in different ways,I'm sure of that.

Wow I've seen it blow heads on diesels and such but never that much damage in a gasser. It's amazing what you can do with just a second or two spraying stuff out of a can nd the s

I just use a hand sprayer of gas in the carb if being lazy just to see it start. Why use ether?
|
we in the auto tech industry always use a sprits of carb cleaner or flamable brakecleaner out the tube , if the engine needs fuel to get going . I have a honda bug mower to mow mom's place that I have to spray to get started but works well. What use starting spray ever had is a big ? maybe extreme cold weather were the gas will not aireate or worn out low compression motors

I used a old oil Quote put a hole it the top then squrt gas in the carb

WAIT! You can use ether to start a motor? I thought it was for mounting tires, huh. Learn something new every day.
:bigthink: :biggrin2::Explode: P.S. kids don't try this with out adult.......errrrrr RESPONSIBLE adult supervision. |
It all depends on what you use it on. I agree that either will damage gas and diesel engines if ya use too much of it. Also though on our pulling tractor, we have to use about 1/2 a can each time we cold start it (during summer with block heater) because of the compression ratio we run. And for winter pulls it takes about 2 cans. Even with using that much either it never harms the engine. It all depends what you use it for.
