Making a QL - quieter anyone interested? Group buy?

Guys,

It looks to me and after reading Kirkengines writeup, these Kohler mufflers were made for spark arresting or something else than being quite. I'm having someone whom does custom cart and motorcycle mufflers throw together one. His thought was he could get the peak exhaust db down into the 80's. That would be a huge difference as log scale. going from a 10% reduction is 1/2 the energy.

I know there will still be lots of mechanical noise and with a lower exhaust noise it might even sound a bit weird.

Would there be interest in a group-buy of mufflers? He's had several of his designs reverse engineered and manufactured somewhere else now.. so it would have to be a 1-shot group buy?? I'm assuming all the kohler 1250/1450/1650's took the same muffler.

A little dynomat to the inside of the hood... could be sweet.

I will submit my stack design
I built it as the turbo muffler design thats with the perferated inside tube open instead of closed letting the exhaust flow straight threw it but is interupted by the holes in the pipe letting exhaust threw . I don't know how many DB's but not bad as the tip is pointed away and up the pipe, made from 2in conduit ,1in conduit, freeze plugs

the idea is to fit within QL muffler location.

Yea- I know he's got to be reasonable which to me is less than a new Kohler muffler. I think motorcycle stuff is $75-150.. but I will have the heart to heart about it when we make the first one.

Not this guy---

Loud muffler= cheese off the neighbors while I am wearing earplugs.

:biggrin2::biggrin2:

Seriously though, it's a good idea.

I'm interested. This is actually something I was going to ask about here. Looking to play around with my kids and their friends with my 108 and they are still rather young. Toning it down some would be nice because they can get scared by the noise. Can we get a ballpark price?

Just found this thread when searching on mufflers- did anything ever come about this?

garnold 08-17-2016 12:03 PM

Same here. I responded as interested but lost track of this thread. As much as I like the engine guts, I sometimes have to mow late at night and would like to keep my neighbors as friends as long as I can HAHAHA!
