Steering wheel decal removal

I have to remove the steering wheel on my 149 to service the column. I have found and read several threads here and I have pretty good idea on how to get the wheel off the column, but none of the threads mention removing the decal, or metal cover on the wheel that hides the nut. Is there a way to remove it without destroying it? How is it fastened? How is it re installed?
Thanks.

It is stuck on there with the adhesive on the back of the decal. You can use WD 39 to soften up the glue.

Mine was a metal cover on my 129 and It was glued down. I carefully put a heat gun to it and again carefully pried it up and it came off without damage.

Thanks guys. I guess some patience will be required. I hope I can remember where I put it after the last time I used it.

If I don't destroy it, I guess I can use contact cement to replace it right?

That's what I did. I'm pretty sure that's what was on it before. I think mine had been off before by a PO.

Thanks for the help. I sprayed some WD40 around it and them slipped a razor blade under. It peeled off nice and easy. I also used the 5/8 fine thread nit and bolt with hammer trick and the steering wheel popped right off.

Glad to hear it, Steve!

Glad to hear that you got it off so easy. I tried wd40 on mine but that thing was really on there. The PO went nuts with the glue.

Yep, good to hear it came off easy for you Steve. I have taken off 2 that I thought some things were going to break. :Duh:
