Cub Cadet 169 Newbie! Updated with Picture!
 

Hey Guys-

Last week I purchased my first Cub Cadet 169! My dad always had a small loader when I was growing up and figured it was worth the purchase to have one of my own. I found a 71 Cub Cadet 169 w Johnson 10c loader on it sitting in someones backyard. Knocked on the door the and they guy said its yours for $475. It had a broke spindle and no spark. Ordered a new spindle and replaced the coil and she is running great now.

Couple questions:

1. Any know where to fill the the loader with fluid?
2. Is the drain plug for the hydrostatic drive actually have a hose on it? I found the filter but unsure about the drain plug.
3. Should the loader have down pressure? I thought it should.. but could be due to lack of fluid.

Loader+CC= broken front spindle?

Not surprising. Glad you could get it fixed; 169s are great machines.

Welcome to OCC!!! sounds like a sweet deal even if it needs some work!! Take a look in the technical tractors section for your manuals that will help answer some questions! There's a few loader guys here that should pipe up and help out with the loader questions! Good luck and lets see some pics when ya get a chance!! Meant to answer your drain hose question, no you have to take the rear cover off to drain and be ready to clean some gunk out. New gasket and a filter and it will be up and moving in no time! Just fill back up to the hole in the rear cover plate.

mswol767: If you didn't find the oil fill opening on the 10c yet it is located on the top of the support behind the spool valve mount and uses a breather type cap (pipe thread) cover. The loader does have down pressure if it still has double acting cylinder's installed.

You will really like that loader, I bought mine used 30 years ago and I am now just replacing the seals in the hydraulic cylinders, they are a rugged unit. I'm really surprised the front spindle broke but I've seen guy's post broken axles and spindles under normal use too (mowing), I have never had a problem and have had many capacity loads in the bucket.

Some great answers already given.:beerchug: To get the max weight in the tires go to http://www.rimguard.biz/ and locate your local dealer. If one is not local you can load them with antifreeze.

For the front spindles you could upgrade to 1" spindles and 5 lug trailer rim and hubs. It'll cost some extra $$ but you'll have a hard time breaking them again.:biggrin2:
