127 Spring Assist
 

Does anyone have instructions and/or pictures of how to install a spring assist on a 127? I have one on order. I searched the forums and found some diagrams of it on a 106, but looks a bit different then it would go on the 127. Will I have to modify the back housing sheet metal?

There were two different spring assists made for Cubs, one is IH and the other was made by Brinly, if I'm not mistaken. Either should fit your tractor, however the Brinly made assist clamps to the lift bar on the 3 point, on the right side in the tunnel and the IH made assist clamps to the implement lift rockshaft, in the left side of the tunnel.

I can't seem to find any info on installing the Brinley spring.

They are pretty simple. It either bolts onto the rockshaft w/clamp setup, or there will be two holes on the mower deck lift-arm where a bracket goes (I think that is WF).
The angled bracket bolts to the seat mount panel from undernieth.
Take the rear cover off to slide the assm. through, attach the vertical arm from underneath (deck must be off.)

Sorry Wild Bill, but the underneath shot of 149 shows the two holes I'm talking about. They are on the left mower lift arm. Front implements attach to the rt side where the handle, and 3pt lift bar are located.
I'm trying to figure out how to copy the photo to here....2 years of computer school....what a waste of money!

Thanks Wild Bill, that's what I was talking about. I was thinking of using that set up...seems more stable. But it looks like the mower lift arms are slightly different.
I fabricated my assembly, but the clamp on bracket moves occasionally, it's a pain.
So I figured I can drill two holes and make a diff bracket, like the WF .

If the clamp-on bracket moves, I don't think you have it installed correctly. There is really no way for it to move when it's installed the right way.

I made it, it's not original. And, I know it's not perfect......just haven't had the opportunity to correct it. Don't have access to a bridgeport anymore.
But, from what I saw, it can be placed anywhere on the rockshaft, so there is no "Correct" assembly. It either works, or doesn't.

Spring Assist success
 

My spring assist came in last night. I removed the sheet steel plate that covers the upper rear end cover & installed the 90° bracket for the tension bolt stay using an existing welded nut provision on top of the left rear frame rail. Slid the spring and rod in the frame & bolted up the 'U' bolt on the rock shaft. Initially something seemed wrong, as it appeared I was losing tension after a few lift cycles. I reread this thread this morning & Matt's last post "If the clamp-on bracket moves, I don't think you have it installed correctly." "There is really no way for it to move when it's installed the right way". Sure enough I had the rock shaft bracket on backwards. Now I can see when it is installed right, it cannot move. Thanks Matt. You help lots of people w/your great knowledge of Cubs.

Lastly, I didn't want to cut the nice rear end frame cover so I was able to bend a nice looking offset in it to cover the bolt stay.

Electricmonster, is there a "flat" spot on the rockshaft where the arm is supposed to mount, that I didn't see?
Because I'm wondering what you mean by the "correct" place to bolt it to the shaft.

Spring Assist Mounting
 

Yes. There is a slight lip on the mounting bracket. The 'U' bolt goes around the Rockshaft & the lip on the bracket goes under the lift arm that is used for the mower deck under carriage. I'll post some pictures later today.
