Tractor stalls when engaging the PTO
I have a 2182 and just installed a new 48" deck, now when I turn on the PTO the engine stalls. Any idea what is going on. Also where do you check the hydro fluid on these. Thanks again.

Just wondering if he has a late 2182 with the large PTO pulley and an early deck with the small pulley because they do have a couple pulley combos. |
This may seem too simple but did you check to see if the mower blades are jammed or touching.
May sound dumb but I had one like that baffle was bent blade was hitting it. All it took was a soft persuasion with a rubber mallet. Then everything worked fine. |
Take the belt off the pto and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then you have a problem with the attachment, if not then it's probably an electrical problem or something with the pto.

Thanks guys for all your thoughts. It is a NOS deck I located and did spin freely when I installed it. It is a later 2182 with the large pulley on the PTO and a smaller on the deck. It may be the warm up issue because I did use it once but the tractor was already warm. I am going to go out now and let it warm up then try it again. Will let you guys know.

Also, I have learned that if your battery is really weak the PTO can stall the engine when it is engaged. The PTO takes a lot of electricity to operate and that can cause the plugs to not fire. My guess is that it is in the safety system somewhere. You can use a jumper wire to go from the battery or starter terminal and if the PTO operates normally then it is in the safety system. If not then it may be the battery or a mechanical cause. Good hunting!:beerchug:
