72 mower deck 38"
 

I recently bought a 72 to mow my yard and the mower deck is in excellent shape except for 1 spindle shaft. I have found some for sale (yes i checked sponsor sites) but they all seem to be OEM or NOS and are expensive. This would be the route to go if you were rebuilding to never use and have a complete factory tractor, however, I plan on putting this cub to some good use. Is there anyone out there that makes these for cheaper? I wish i was still in the Navy working in the machine shop, but that is not the case so I am stuck looking. Also, i think i read somewhere that the deck bearings were also a chevy part? I would think I could order them if I knew the I.D./O.D. and type of bearing. Any advice would be appreciated. I hope to completely rebuild this deck and get another 40 years of service out of it, maybe more with proper maintenance.

I've read or heard that the spindles are not rebuildable/must be replaced as a unit. I don't know for sure, but I can say that one of my spindles (on my 44c deck) came apart easily and I inspected the bearings. I suppose you could take the code off them and go to NAPA and find replacements. Mine were tapered roller bearings. I regreased and put mine back together.
