1882 battery suggestions?

Hey guys,

First time poster here with a battery question. I recently purchased an 1882 and I'm having battery issues (i think). The tractor seems to be in great condition but previous owner had it storage for past few years.

It started fine the first few times I used it. Now when starting, it cranks the first time but doesn't fire up. Next attempt it doesn't crank but I think I hear the starter. I removed battery (dated 07/08) and put it on charger for a few hours, put it back in and it started right up. I thought, fine.. battery is 5 years old and I probably need a new one.

Today (2 weeks later), I go to start it and it does the same thing (cranks/no start). Instead of removing the battery again to charge, I tried to jump start it with my vehicle. It didn't seem to help at all, it still won't start.

I think I should just put in a brand new battery but I want to make sure to get the correct one. The manufacturer calls for 925-3174 & costs around $150. the current 5 year old battery is an autocraft 51R-2 (500 cca). These sell for $120 at advance auto, however wal-mart sells that group size battery for $85.

Which battery do you think I should buy? Also, how does the 51R-2 compare to the 925-3174? I'd like to use the correct battery but cost is an issue and I don't want to spend the extra $$ if I don't have to.

Thank you for reading my 1st long-winded post!

That sure is a good looking tractor. It looks brand new.

I sold my neighbor an old Cub Cadet. The battery was dead.

I charged it until the charger said it was 95% (I think the charger checks voltage) and it would not crank the tractor.

I jumped it and delivered it, with him understanding he had to get a new battery.

Well, he decided to try to charge it one more time. He used an analog charger (no computer!! :bigthink:) and forgot it for two days.

The battery is now perfect. Computers are not perfect for everything, I guess not battery chargers!!

:biggrin2:

This is what I will be putting in my tractors. I had one in my race car, it doesn't leak acid all over the place and it will crank a 383 Chevy race engine with no problem. http://www.stealth316.com/2-dynabatt.htm#g16ep
