Narrow frame engine repower
 

my model 71 needs an engine and i thought something with more power would be cool, also would be cool if it's ready to install rather than to rebuild.

i'm debating a honda clone engine for my 71, can get 13 hp for under 250 bucks. that is if the recoil start can be removed and the driveshaft hub made to fit the crank and i can mount the pto to the other side of the crank.

something out of a later cub cadet would be cool too, i would like to see what has been done.......would an engine out of a 2000 series tractor work?

Unless you go back with a K series Kohler, there is a lot of modifying to be done. A twin will not fit in the frame without modification. I know at least a K301 will fit, but I don't know off hand if a K341 will.

k 301 is the biggest k that will fit a narrow frame without mods (the 147 had gussets for the k321)

the frame is already cut on this tractor, yrs ago mower shop installed a k161 out of an original and cut the frame out for the oil drain.

i have a torch and a welder, and lots of time. mods are no problem lol

Yeah, I know all that..... but if your looking at anything larger than a 12HP or anything other than a K series, then the width of the frame is only the beginning. Now your talking wiring changes, driveline issues, PTO changes, yadda, yadda. Just pick a motor and go for it! My personal opinion, stick with Kohler! :biggrin2:

Respectably agree! A good, strong Kohler K301 will have plenty of power. So unless your serious about all the different changes, the whole project could end up getting scrapped.

I third the Kohler vote! Some of the best, if not the best, small (single cylinder) engines I've ever had the pleasure of using. They'll take a real beating and keep on going like nothing happened. Plus they are the easiest install for what you're doing so go for it! :beerchug:

your probably right, that's why i dont see narrow frames with engines other than k series.
i have a k301 in my 127 (total basket case) but it has not run since the late 80's

It would be nice to know what will fit with min mods.

In a NF, I don't think there is any such thing.
