Rear PTO Problem
 

I just replaced the field coil on the rear PTO on my 1572. The coil is working fine my problem now is that when the coil is off the armature continues to spin. When the PTO is off and engine is off the armature spins freely but you can hear it rubbing the rotor a little. I think it is warped a little and continues to hit the rotor even when coil is off. Also the coil and rotor have grooves warn on their surface. I was thinking of having the surfaces cut similar to a worn brake rotor. Anybody have any thoughts on this or has anybody done this or any other suggestions.

Those ptos' will do that when the bearing is starting to go. I am thinking it is like a front clutch.

The gap should be adjustable.

My SIL give the front clutch pure h~((, reverse causes the clutch to stop, he reengages at full throttle, L O T S !! :bigeyes:

That unit is smooth, at least it was when we replaced the bearing.

I guess if your rear pto ran a tiller, it would do well with a slight resurfacing of the plates.

CAD is right about checking the bearing. I've never tried to resurface them, thought about it though. Here's the problem: The clutch isn't stable, so no way to cut it straight. Plus, they are both HARD, and would have to be cut with a grindstone. Your best bet, leave them be, replace the bearing and adjust the air gap. The grooves won't affect it at all. Ive rebuilt and ran LOTS and LOTS of them with grooves.

I thought it would be hard to cut the surface. I do not see anyway that the gap can be set. The rear PTO clutch is different setup than front I have adjusted them before. The bearing seems to be fine.

Also if the bearing was bad I cant find listing for new one.

You won't find a listing for a bearing, and yours may be ok. Time and use will wear them out too. Note: If you don't already do it, the PTO should only be turned on at an idle.

You will/ would have to disassemble the unit, and find a replacement bearing either by bearing number or by size. I'm sure the air gap of the clutch can be adjusted, but the parts pics aren't helping me. If you can post some pics of the PTO, I think I can tell you how to do it. I can't see how the rotor and the clutch are mated. On all types of electric clutches, they can be adjusted. It's just a matter of changing a pres fit clearance, or adding shims. I will be very surprised if this can't be done with that unit. :beerchug:

Does anybody make a replacement clutch for the rear pto's?

To my knowledge, no. At least not as in, you give them your application or part number and they hand you a clutch, no. Now, there are hundreds, maybe even thousands of applications, and types of clutches. Clutch manufacturers seldom build one style for one application. I have a hard time believing the clutch for the rear PTO was a one-of-a-kind. I'm sure with a little time and research, another applications clutch would either bolt right on, or could be made to work with a little modification. I don't have a tractor with a rear PTO to look at for reference, but, like I said before, if I had some pics and dimensions, I think I could find a replacement.

I looked in a bunch of books and can't find a dual clutch with the same diameter. I will look at the one I have tomorrow for a bearing size and air gap adjustment.

I just finished putting the rear PTO back together even though I dont think the bearing was bad I replaced it. Original bearing was NSK 62062DU and I replaced it with a Koyo 62062RSC3. The problem was the armature was not smooth and needed to be adjusted there really is no air gap adjustment like on front cluth you just have to bend the center arms to make it fit the way you want. Even though I will problobly never use it it does work.
