2166 Only runs with switch in start position
 

I`ve got a 2166 with Kohler CH16 engine (2003 bought new), when I crank the engine it starts, but as soon as I release the key to the run position the engine quits.

I suspected the ignition switch, so I replaced it (genuine cub part). Problem not cured.

Checked the reverse, brake and seat switches, they are working properly.

Can`t see any damage to the wiring harnesses (I removed the harness from the frame to inspect it), I removed the engine cowl and checked the wires in there also.

The engine has the latest design ignition system that eliminated the spark advance module, I installed that about a year ago.

This one has me stumped...

Anyone have a wiring diagram for the 2166, also the engine wiring harness diagram?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

I’m pretty sure you have some sort of wiring issue. You’re going to need a test light or a meter to do some checking on this one. The fuel shut down solenoid on the carb needs power to run so you need to see if you have power to it both during the crank and run positions. The kill circuit grounds out the magneto to shut it down, check to see that it is not grounding out in the run position.

I checked the circuit for the fuel shut down solenoid, I have 12 volts in run and crank positions of the switch.


I disconnected the kill wire that goes to the ignition (white wire), so the engine should have run if the problem was caused by a safety interlock switch, but if it was a bad switch, I would think the engine would not even crank....

Anyway, I sure appreciate the help, I finally admitted defeat and called the dealer to pick the machine up. When I find out what the problem was, I will post it here.

It should run with what you did. Just out of curiosity who is your dealer? I used to live in CT and found Newtown Power Equipment to be very good.

It is going to Prime Power in Vernon (Cub Dealer).

I`m betting that when I find out what was wrong I`ll hit myself in the forehad and say "How did I miss that..."

I'm curious.... did this thing just up and die? Or did you go out one day and it wouldn't start? I'm sure the cub dealer will fix it, but like Sam, I'm kinda stumped. :bigthink:

It died while I was mowing, just like turning off the switch.

Let us know what they find, but I wish I had known that earlier. I believe that they are going to find a bad fuel shut-off solenoid. Let us know! :beerchug:
