Diesel motor mounts
 

Okay guys, I've looked through all of the service manuals, and there's nothing in there about the installation of the motor mounts. Are the mounts supposed to be squished, with the metal insert in the bottom mount touching the washer inside of the upper mount? These mounts are similar to the new ISO mounts for the Quietlines and 12XX models, would that be a good guideline? If so, what is the general consensus on them? I bought four new mounts and I don't want to ruin them, or have excessive vibration. Thanks.

Good question Cory and I don't know the answer. Maybe when you take one of the existing mounts apart you will be able to determine if they were compressed so that the tube was metal to metal. Oak may know more about them since he has more smokers than anyone. :biggrin2:

This is a picture from the starter upgrade write-up, and I've seen a few more showing them squished. The other picture is from a dealer brochure, but it's hard to tell and there are a few pics showing a completely different mount. Contact was made on my old mounts, but I imagine I wasn't the first person to touch them. The lock washers tell me the bolt and nut should be tightened up. I guess I'll tighten them up. Perhaps I'm putting too much thought into this.:bash2:

You are not putting too much thought in, these are the thoughts that make the job right!

The IPL for the 1772 and 1782 through the end all show lockwashers with standard nuts, therefore they must be tightened down. It is all Grade 5 hardware, so it should be torqued to the spec for Grade 5 which is about 35 ft-lb.

Although they should be torqued, this is a good place for a deformed (or distorted) thread lock nut which won't come loose as the rubber relaxes.

As you would expect, the 2182 shares the same mounts and hardware. Based on your post, I ran out and checked two of mine on a new to me tractor (2182-2) I am getting ready for use. One was looser than the other, but they both took 35 ft-lbs just fine without excessive deformation. Getting kind of late, the other two can get checked tomorrow...

For your new install, I would check them again after they have settled in.
