What did I break?

I was plowing a neighbors driveway the other day with my 149 and it stopped dead in its tracks. Trying to get it restarted I noticed the back shaft to the hydro and the front pto pulley spin independently from from each other. I got a feeling I broke something really bad..

Did I break the crankshaft or is there some interesting parts in the flywheel to break also?

Thx,
Bill

Yep you broke something important that makes it go. Think your guess about the crank now being in two pieces is a good possibility unless the flywheel came loose.

Would I be able to bolt in my 127 engine in to the 149 for a while ? The 127 runs great but the steering sucks and no hydro lift. I'd rather be plowing with the 149 until (fingers crossed) spring gets here..

Thx,
Bill

Yup it'll bolt right in

Great well at least I got something until the K321a is repaired.

It didn't take as long as I thought it would to find out what broke. When I got the engine loose and slid forward to get the shaft out, the flywheel nut came off too.

Seems that 3 things happened. The nut came off, the key came out, the flywheel broke at the taper. In what order I don't know.

Anyone got an extra 321a flywheel around?

Thanks,
Bill

Yeah maybe you're right. What do you think? Some JB Weld and I'm good to go?

:bigthink:

J-Mech 02-20-2014 06:43 PM

Tough call......
I'd be tempted to try it. No, JB weld will only make it look better, wouldn't hold under the pressure of the taper. I dunno...... it may be fine. Your call. If it were mine, I'd set it on there and see if it still fits tight. Then tighten it down and roll the motor by hand. If it didn't wobble, I think I'd run it. If it had any wobble, I'd toss it. But, like I said, your call. :bigthink:

Maybe Sam, Merk or Don will have an opinion.......

Are the flywheels cast iron? maybe weld it if it isn't and someone with a stick welder can weld it if it is cast iron.

dvogtvpe 02-20-2014 07:01 PM

they are cast, I would scrap it, I've seen them come apart on pullers. you really don't know if there's any other fractures there. I'd hae a hard time trusting it when you look at it in risk vs reward
