Lot's of engines that will play nice in a 2072. Depends on what you want. Gas Diesel. Kohler CH's, Vanguards, Chinese diesels. Or look for a used Kohler Mag 18 or a Mag 20. If the tractor is in good condition it's worth dropping a new engine in it. Where in WV are you?

How handy with tools are you? When I do a re-power I look for engines out of Cub 2160,2164,2165 or a 2185. The first 3 are 16HP Vanguards the 2185 had the Kohler CH18. Your engine should have a 1-1/8" shaft. If you go the re-power route you will need to fab up a new drive shaft, exhaust system, ducting to control the air flow and some wiring changes. This is another option pretty close to a plug and play but you may need to do a few things.

EricRs and my 2072 was reengined with a Command 18 when we bought it. We felt it was a cobbled job as they fit the engine to the drive shaft drilling new holes to mount and left the front pto too far forward. There was little effort to align the engine to the drive shaft so it ran a bit crooked. We repositioned the engine and had a custom drive shaft made and used rag joints fore and aft for connections. We did have to raise the engine about 3/8 inch to line everything up. The choice of a command engine is definately not a bolt in and go affair but can be done, wiring is different too but so different it cannot be made to work.
