Troy Bilt Horse Tiller
 

I have been looking for some time now. Dad has one and I love it. It tills nicely. I have a tiller for my 1450 but the 1450 needs some work and my 782 needs some parts to use the tiller on it. Does anybody know of a forum site with parts list, manual, advice such as this great site but for Troy Bilts?

BTW - Sam, don't know if you know it, but his place of business is up the road from you in Roanoke. I've got a Troybilt Horse tiller with a 8 hp Kohler Magnum and what (apparently) is a rare Walboro carb with an adjustable high speed jet. The Walboro replacement part number for the carb is one with a fixed high speed jet - go figure! I couldn't find a carb kit for it and Bill Rogers (Valley Power is the business name) was able to find me one. Great guys IMHO.

As to the Horse tiller - really like mine. Also have a Simplicity 516RT rear tine tiller that has a 5 hp Briggs on it and it is really nice for cultivating the garden after it starts growing-in. Though it is lightweight, has forward rotating tines, it has a drag stake for height adjustment and really holds the tiller from lurching forward.

Now the best tiller I've ever had my hands on is my Dad's old BCS rear tine tiller. It is gear drive, the tines spin faster than the Troybilt and has steering brakes - which are handy if you are tilling parallel with a bit of slope in the garden. You can apply some brake to the high side and the tiller will crawl it's way back into the center of the row. It also has a differential, so when you make a turn at the end of a row, you are not dragging the outside wheel - steers like a dream. I am pretty sure it has a differential lock too. Believe it or not - it has an Acme engine! It is an Italian made machine. You can flip the handle bars around and use it like a Gravely 2 wheel tractor and my Dad has a snow thrower for it in this configuration.

The other tiller (aside from the old front tine types) I've got and used - which is an interesting piece, is a two wheel Gravely. I have a rotary plow and rotary cultivator. The rotary plow is a beast. It will pulverize virgin sod and make your garden look like it was moldboard plowed. Just don't be between the handle bars if it hits a solid rock or root! I've used it to dig ditches in addition to plowing a garden. The rotary cultivator uses the same gear head as the rotary plow, but only tills down a couple of inches. It is great for weeding a garden and being that it sets out on the front of the 2 wheel tractor, you can put the nose of it anywhere you want vs a rear tiller is more difficult to put into a spot in the row that needs some attention as you till.

But my favorite is still my old Troybilt - which I bought new.
