782 hi pitch whine

I have a 782 with a KT17 II that has developed an intermittent high pitch whine. I changed the Hy-Tran fluid and filter about 12 months and 30 hours ago. The whine happens more at lower RPM’s than high. I can’t tell if it’s coming from the drive shaft or the trans. My thoughts are drive shaft. This whine is more apparent when not moving. I have the neutral adjusted correctly and the whine happens with the break off as well. This whine is distantly different from the normal hyrdo growl/whine.

Any thoughts/ideas?

Chris

My wife has what I would call the same whine, when I went to change her fluid and filter the whine became more... No, wait... I may be thinking of something else.

LOL. My wife's is more like a bark than a whine.

I had a chance to look at the tractor and the drive shaft has no play. I changed the engine oil/filter, sharped the blades and installed the mower deck. I noticed that the PTO was making some noise when not engaged and no PTO belt on. Turning the PTO on stopped the noise. After installing the deck and belt, the PTO noise went away. Also, the whine I mentioned above would go away when the PTO was turned on.

Would it indicate a bad PTO bearing?

Thought you said it was a tranny whine. :bigthink:
Yes, a bad bearing could make it whine.
