782, Kinda.

OK I dragged this home. And am questioning my judgment. There must be something on here that is useful. First glance:

Positive attributes:
Its red (actually tad too much pink in it, but sorta red)
It has a S/N plate (havent looked it up)
It wasnt expensive (rarely is something 'free', it cost in one way or another)
It runs. And sounds pretty decent even. No big knocks or taps to my ear.
The emblem on the front looks good.
It has pin stripes.
It has tubes in the rears (I happen to need a set of tubes)
The side panels are decent
The front grill is there
The hydro works and no big whine and seems ok
No leaks (no oil leaks, no hydro leaks)
Mule drive seems all there (if I have the right terminology)
I didnt pay a lot

More questionable attributes:
The hood is missing (embarrasingly, it was there when I left for home... :RedFace2: )
Rotted rims
beat up, and rotted fenders
Seat, ditto
Some tins missing in/around the engine
Steering quite loose
Tie rods ditto
No battery
After market switches and push button starter (but of decent quality)
No safety switches (brake, seat, et al)
Some wiring splices (but again, it runs)
dash cracked
starter only engages every 5th or 10th attempt
87 other things
I did pay 'some' (am pretty comfortable I can get the $$ backs, even just in what I save on the rear tubes....)

The PO had it 20+ years, and it was send it home with me or send it to scrap.

The question is... now what do I do with it? I do have a project I can steal parts for - or could swap the other way and have a red 782 (784 since I want to end up with a dual hydraulic). I cant see trying to piece this all back together as stand alone

Pics are worth a thousand, so here you are.

Decent back tires, front lower grill and the logo/headlight mesh are present.....you're already ahead of the game!

Well, it's IH built. So you can put that on your list of "pluses". Good running twins are hard to come by, so that's a plus too.

On the tubes: #1 I have tore down so many tires it isn't funny, if you actually can get the tires off the rusty rims, you will most surely rip the tube. #2 I think you will find the rear tires fluid filled. Rust on the R.H. rim is at the valve stem. I'm pretty sure they have fluid in them.

Looks like a good parts tractor at least! :beerchug:

Ya.... and what I originally thought when I went to see it. But then when I saw it, was having a hard time itemizing decent parts that I needed. Its going to be parts. I just need to itemize and list whats there thats worthwhile (the engine should be worth something to someone so thats a minimum). As with anything, it depends on what your looking for. And there are a bunch of bolts and fasteners I can steal from it (Im missing a few here and there).

Its just a question of how long it can set in my yard before the neighbors file a formal complaint (egged on by my wife perhaps). :biggrin2:

I gotta ask, what happened to the hood? :biggrin2:

Looks like a decent parts tractor, rims are beyond gone, though imho. But def some good parts in there :beerchug:

Prolly caught a little wind and "sailed" off the back of the truck or trailer. I also bungee cord my hoods on. Don't ask me why I do that. :biggrin2:

Not too bad at all! Hope you fix the 782 up. :beerchug:

Good tractor for parts if nothing else. Awesome that it has a cast iron rear end.

Some pics of teardown (cant have this setting outside, its starting to look like Appalachia around my shop (I get to say this because I grew up in Appalachia and although old rusty farm equipment sitting on blocks makes me nostalgic, my neighbors dont appreciate)).

There isnt much thats 'good' about this tractor. It looks better than it is even. As I started into it I thought... well, maybe I should put it back in working order. And if all I wanted was a tractor 'that ran' I could do that, but I couldnt bring myself to let all the little things go without addressing - and there is a long list (things like ammeter shot, hour meter shot, PTO switch almost corroded through, no light switch, no front or rear lights (and wires clipped), drive shaft bent, front of frame bent where accessories clip in, etc etc... it just goes on).

So its going over to the 'pieces for sale' section. I will get enough good pieces for my primary projects so all is not lost. If someone else wants to take on saving it feel free to PM me.
