Hydro Play Problem

2 Attachment(s)
I'm fixing up a 1641 for the FIL but can't figure out what the problem is with the hydro trans. The forward/reverse arm moves about 3 inches before the hydro trans moves the tractor. This results in a jerky response and never reaches full speed in forward or reverse. It seems to be a problem in the trans itself because the linkage does move the hydrostat control arm. I don't see any play or problem in the linkage and I tried to adjust the neutral and forward reverse linkages...no help. Changed the hydro fluid and filter with no effect.

I know there are lots of posts on hydro problems on the site but I did not find what I needed. Any help would be appreciated. I included a couple of picture just because we like them here.

Well, you've got a Hydro Gear.

I'm not really up on these units. They are pretty different in design, and set up from the Sundstrand pumps.

Take a look here:

In the pic, circled in red, is a set screw. It holds the arm on the shaft. Make sure it's tight. If it is, then the problem may be internal. I personally wouldn't tear one of these units apart. You can buy a good used ported Sundstrand unit for around $125, or less. I'd get a different unit. Mainly because, if it is internal, and it's what I suspect, it will cost more to fix than to replace. Good luck! :GoodLuck:

Jonathan, I was thinking that it would be best just to replace the pump. I will give it a try and let you know the results.

Thanks for your comments!

Rick

I'm not sure a Sundstrand will be a direct swap for a Hydro Gear. I'll do a little research for you.

Jonathan, I checked the set screw on the back of the hydro actuator arm that you highlighted. You got it! It was loose. Tightened it up and it works perfectly. I can't thank you enough! I just missed the set screw. I am one happy cub driver.:beerchug:

Thanks for the offer to help Sam. Luckily I don't need it.

I'm gonna go have a cold one and a cigar to celebrate. Jonathan I gotta send you one!:beerchug::beerchug:
