Grouchy and sometimes rude
 

I've been a member of O.C.C. for a few years now and I personally have never had an problem with any answer to a question that I have ever ask for help with.I do from time to time see folks asking sometimes just a very basic and simple question and someone will leave a comment that either is or reads as if it is somewhat rude.I don't want to be judgemental and Im certainly not trying to be but what may seem to some as a dumb or simple question can be to that person a huge issue because they don't have the knowledge that others do about these machines.It just seems to me that it would be better to not comment at all if the comment can't be left in a nice,polite,helpful and meaningful manner.Just a thought and I hope I haven't made anyone mad by saying this,it was definately not my intent.

I believe this situation is common on both sides of the coin on OCC (newbie vs. pro).

We all have our own personalities and some are stronger than others. I'm mostly of the mind set that someone looking for help should be gracious when they get it, but I also see posts from the highly experienced that disappoint me.

All in all, it's the internet and you get what you pay for in terms of message forum situations. We pay zilch to occ, so ANY help is a plus, generally its good help even if it is with a 'tude.

Doesn't have to be so. Ever notice to Paypal donation button at the top of the page? I hear that if you donate, you get the VIP treatment from the mods and a get out of jail free card that you can use if you get banned.

Well, here is my perspective.

Been here since day one. Answered 1,000 of questions.

I don't disagree with cubfan but there is the other side.

It is very frustrating, to answer a question when the answer is a simple as: going to the Cub Cadet Parts lookup site and spending a few minutes looking for the information in the parts manual, to simply go to their Owner's Manual and read through it, to simply go to the Technical Library Section and D/L the Service Manual, to simply read a guideline or policy that makes it fair for all. A lot of inquiries are seen where the information is right at their finger tips. And yes, one gets a little testie when you answer one of these simply questions for the 100+ times. And this is all done FREE OF CHARGE and without the annoying popup Ads.

NOW...recently someone wanted a modified wiring diagram so they could stick a non-original motor (ie: M-18 into a 782, etc) into their tractor and make it work. I spent 1.5 hours on this diagram and sent it to this person via e-mail. What did I get in return...........SILENCE. This person didn't or couldn't spend 1.5 seconds of his time to say THANK YOU in a post by simple hit the reply button. All the Mod go out of their way to help people on a daily basis.

Couple these things together and sometimes one has a bad day or moment.

Here's a big reason why I quit posting my experiences and some of my knowledge. RUDE and GROUCHY comments. I have recieved so much negative BS from experiences or things that have helped me fix these Cubs that I'm sick of it. I hardly post and really have gotten to the point of getting rid of the collection and getting away from this hobby. Especially if I made a mistake on something or posted the incorrect information! Talk about a bash session!! I have also recieved rude comments from mods and other members when I simply post a question. Very good point from the OP.

I understand the mods point, it gets old seeing and hearing the same questions that would be solved by a little more OP work. BUT, if you get so "testie" about it, then why are you a mod? Would one act like that if you were talking to them face to face vs. behind a computer screen? I would certainly hope not. Do you think a mechanic that relies on customer interactions is going to say the stuff that is sometimes typed on here face to face to a customer?? Boy, I hope not. They would get a bad rep pretty quick.

Like Roland, I see both sides of the coin. There are a LOT of posts that come up on here that are very simply answer by the manual, or the biggest failing I see; use the Search function!! For goodness sakes, there's literally thousands upon thousands of threads on this site alone, your answer is almost certainly out there somewhere. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from posting new threads by any means, lord knows I've made my fair share of stinkers, but at least take 30 seconds to do a quick search. Whenever I get (or am looking at getting) a specific tractor, I search not only here but Google for that model and read whatever I can find. I don't learn everything there is to know about that tractor, but I certainly start off with a good understanding of what I'm getting into.

Well I know I'm guilty of being rude on occasion. If I've offended some of you I apologize. As Roland mentioned it does get old trying to get members to post a correct add. I try to prod the member into correcting the add. I could just delete it but I try to let them know what's wrong. Most of these problems are caused by new members that only sign up for the purpose of selling something then we never hear from them again. For those that we are able to help and say thanks it make the work worthwhile. I don't mind trying to help but when I know that the answer is in the tech library and give the member the link to it and they still wont make the effort to help them selves, well at that point take your tractor to someone and pay to get it fixed. I figure I devote at least 40 hours a week to this site. I've been helped countless times by members like Roland with some of my off the wall repower electrical problems. Anyway I'm glad to hear the good and the bad. If any of you have an issue with me feel free to PM me and we'll try to get the matter resolved.

With all due respect (which is quite a bit in this case) THAT is one of the most, without a better way to put it right now, a-hole responses a newb could get.

I understand why you would say that, and I understand the need to say it, but why can't people be just a bit nicer about it? I've participated in a large group of forums over the years (mustangs, firearms, Starions, computers, etc) and I've never seen such blunt behavior (well... the 'stang guys are an exception... most of them drive like it too as I'm sure everyone in the US has noticed. I do not. I liked to be an ambassador of goodwill).

What's the problem giving answer to some guy that wants to adjust his hydro/brakes like "pull the rear fenders and all becomes obvious.. also look at this thread..." vs. "hey, moron, look at this!!!"...

I dunno... Its just the vibe I get around here... You can't even begin to understand how many, whether worded that way or not "how do I set the timing on my 5.0?" threads get started and for the most part those guys offer some immediate help in their reply, even if it does point to a sticky.

This is great stuff. It's all really helpful when we can read all responses and not take them personally. We all get frustrated, we have different skills and abilities,,or inabilities as some of the solution providers find out.
Yes we are all humans and some us like to take the path of least resistance or effort. Some of us have a very busy life and have very little time to hit the garage so we like to get answers quickly without scanning a 400 page manual for something that we're not even sure what it is or what it does. I don't mind at all if a link or manual is provided but sometimes I still can't find something (thanks Sam).
I've been around for a while, my participation usually is directly related to what I'm doing with one of my 8 Cubs. I like to just check in and read from time-to-time but not always. I've received some great guidance from some members that I can't find on this forum any longer. I think he got mad and left and he provided fantastic insight. You had to take some grief at times but I didn't care as long as I got my answer. Some have thick skin some don't, I'm glad I do.
I want to thank all of you very much for your help and for those times that your responses seem a little sharp and to the point, don't worry about it. I know you have to get frustrated at times, anyone in the support business shares that attribute I'm sure.
So my final thoughts on this are.....be grouchy and rude but as long as you're helping me I'll be appreciative and I'll not hold it against you. I know if we would meet in person we would have a great time talking about these cool machines.
