Would you pay $3,500 for a 100 hr 2182?
A friend called me about a 2182 (Kubota gas) tractor with 100 hours on it. Sounded questionable but ended up being true. Went over and looked at it, found that it has been sitting for close to 15 years in a garage. It has a 50" deck, two flat front tires, gas has turned to varnish, battery is junk and needs a good cleaning as it is covered with dust . Owner says he will get it cleaned up and running but wont take less than $3,500.00. He bought it new and paid over $7,000.00 for it.
:bigthink: Question being, would you pay $3,500.00 for a true 100 hour 2182 w/ 50" deck that will be in excellent condition? There was a nicely restored one that sold for $2,600.00 recently listed here. I want it, but can't pull the trigger! I have just added pictures! |
No, I forsee leaky hydraulics if it sat long enough to varnish the gas. The rear is probably got a milkshake going on inside. A lot of damage can happen in 100 hours in the wrong hands. I would not go over $2k.

All depends on what condition it's in. If it had been properly stored maybe but if it was just parked to rot then no. My guess is it will be a leaker if he can even get it running. I'd be worried about the inside of the engine probably has a lot of condensation caused rust. Same issue in the trans. I'd expect any of the gears or bearings above the oil level are rusted. Seals dry rotted. Sad but it is what it is. Any chance of getting pics?

I will let the experts weigh in with the details, but my experience has been that equipment that just 'sits' for a long time is problematic. They need to be used at least some.
Friend of mine had a few old cars. He rotated running them, taking turns to be sure each one was driven at least semi-regularly. It was a lot of work, and there were always surprises on something needing fixed. |
I think that is too much. I'd look for one that may have more hours on it but has been run and maintained mechanically for less money than he is asking. They can be found if you are patient. Like this one:

And hour meters can quit or be disconnected.

If you want one that's had all to need to do stuff already done you can have this one for $3000.00

I agree with everyone else. When stuff sits and isn't "put to bed" correctly, things rust and dry out. The seals will dry out and could leak. Fuel system would need cleaned. If the front tires have been flat, they are prolly shot. Not saying these aren't easy fixes, except seals, but would make it not worth $3500, IMHO. Three point and rear PTO on the back? If not, sounds like more of a $2000 tractor??? Good luck and keep us posted if ya get it. :beerchug:

For every reason listed above (dry seals, rusty internals, gelled fluids, rusted/dried bearings, etc) I would pass. I'm sorry, but a plain jane Super (even in good condition) isn't worth $3,500 anymore, not without options like 3 point, rear PTO, blade, or blower, etc. That's just my opinion, I'm not trying to offend anyone. Supers are GREAT machines, and well worth investing in, I just don't think they are worth $3500 after sitting for 15 years. :beerchug:
